“Come on in and make yourselves at home,” said no nuclear power plant guard ever
Are you more afraid of our government being too smart or too dumb?
If you’re afraid of the government being too smart, you’re probably worried about all the spying they’re doing on us, all the bullets they’re buying up, all the military equipment they’re giving to local police departments and all the elections they’re trying to rig.
If you’re afraid of the government being too dumb, you’re probably concerned about them getting us involved in too many wars, how they’re not upgrading the electrical grid, how they’re not securing our borders and how they’re trying to change the Constitution.
I go back and forth on this. But today, my issue is with how dumb they are. Wouldn’t you think that with all of the talk about terrorism and with all of the threats against our country that have come from terrorist nations and individual terrorists, that we would make sure that all of our nuclear plants were protected at all times?
I certainly would, and so I was surprised to learn that recently a nuclear plant within 50 miles of Washington, D.C., was being left virtually unguarded, according to the Daily Caller. Reporters from this publication said they drove right up to the reactor at Maryland’s Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant without encountering any security officers. They weren’t stopped by a locked gate and they weren’t questioned by anyone working there. A reporter called it, “one of the softest targets I’ve ever seen.”
Before publishing its report about it, the Daily Caller alerted the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which promised that the security problems would be fixed.
Well, gee, thanks. That’s a great idea. How about doing that BEFORE somebody figures out that a nuclear plant is a soft target? Right now, terrorists around the world are doing everything they can to get fake passports that will allow them to come into the United States. Of course, thanks to Obama, they could just walk across the Mexican border without a problem, but that’s a subject for another day.
What are you more afraid of? The government doing something on purpose to take away your rights or the government doing something stupid that would put is in danger? I’d love to hear from you about this.

Like so many people who put up articles on the web, Frank Bates is “not minding the store.” No promise to contact the head honchos at Daily Caller and use all the good will he has built up with them to get all the details of what really happened. This makes his comment, “I’d love to hear more from you about this” ring hollow.
I’m sure the areas that those reporters were in were not even close to the reactors. I live near the coast and having seen the patrol boats near a couple of the nuke plants along the coastline I’m sure they couldn’t have driven that close. I know of several nuke plants that will get closing down soon because the government has made it to expensive for them to continue to operate. Oil and nat gas prices being driven down, temporarily, made them cheaper alternatives. What happens when the Middle East explodes again and oil goes back thru the roof. Also the disposal of nuke waste that the government promised a site for that was never finished. The government also never funded research on newer nuke tech like the Chinese pelletized fuel (pebble bed reactors) small plants the size of a semi that could power a small town.
I am afraid of the stupid things our government has done to both provoke those who want to harm us and to erode our personal rights.
I am also afraid that the government will continue to look after its own best interest not ours. It won’t matter who we vote into office.
We need to protect our own rights and fight to keep them. The government sees our personal rights as ways for the people to revolt and overthrow them. That was how our constitution was designed. To allow the people to stand up when the government tells us we have to sit down.
Continue to stand up!
Every since the Government took civilian nuclear power plants out of the hands of Admiral Hiram Rickover they have had untold security and safety issues. Their programs lack the seriousness of the Naval Nuclear Power program so it does not surprise me.
Of course, Rickover was whacko, too. As a Navy-trained Reactor Operator, I am fairly confident in the safety of the plants themselves (or at least the ones designed for ship propulsion) , but not at all confident in our “leaders” or plans to contain and process nuclear waste.
I think we have two sides to our government. One side is totally stupid, and the other side is really smart. The smart side is the militant group and the dumb side is the stupid side. One tries to take advantage, and the other side screams bloody marry. We put them all together and we have our government. It’s funny how we all vote for these people and then we all scream bloody marry when they do stupid things. We need to do our own research on who we are putting into office. Not scream bloody marry when all the stupid stuff happens. I think this is what the smart group would do? But I don’t know my ass from a hole in the ground? So maybe I will vote to get the popular guy or woman into office? I think? I think Frank is great. The controversy he puts out is good. I think society is just like the Simpsons. Where is Marge?
I think there are plenty intelligent patriots that can & should be in charge of running the USA & I also believe We the People may find it necessary to Clean Up Our White House or Clean it out of the current residents who are destroying Our Constitution & those who are actually ruining Our Nation because it is quite clear they are not in love with the USA because they keep making executive orders & try to change the way America is & make it into a poverty state.
taking our rights and the govt. doing something stupid they are one in the same! The problem most Americans are so stupid that they believe anything the Govt. tells them here is a perfect example of how stupid most Americans are”AN ALUMINUM AIRPLANE BROUGHT DOWN THE TWIN TOWERS”A CONCRETE AND STEEL BUILDING!!! “A 767 JUMBO JET HIT THE PENTAGON” THE WING SPAN OF A 767 IS 124FEET 10 INCHES 2 QUESTIONS HOW COME IT DIDNT COLLAPSE THE PENTAGON IT DID THE TWIN TOWERS? HOW COME IT ONLY LEFT A 16 FOOT DIAMETER HOLE WHERE IS THE OTHER 108FOOT&10INCHES? ok I’m sorry three questions here is a quote from CHUCK NORRIS “WAKE UP AMERICA”
It doesn’t take much thought to figure out how a the tall twin towers could collapse and not a squatty reinforced pentagon can not.
Even IF a terrorist gained access to a nuclear power plant, what would they do once they got inside? Nuke power plants can’t explode and the knowledge and effort it would take to put one into “melt down” is very significant. Terrorists would prefer targets with more loss of life potential, more “news-worthy-ness”. Your fear-mongering article is just as bad as the propaganda put out by the far left.
I’ve worked at Nuclear Power Plants – under construction and those in operation. Without exception the security is higher than what was reported here. Access is NOT granted to just anybody either – especially anywhere there is nuclear materials or the technology of operations is concerned. I seriously question this report… The NRC may or may not be many things, but security has always been there – nothing like what this “Daily Caller” reported.
I agree. But what I don’t understand is Why does the media, tell anything especially regarding our weaknesses, or our strengths. Why don’t they just call the enemy, directly and tell them 1st hand. It blows my mind. Oh, but wait they want to tell, all of our enemies. Thanks, media, for all you do for us, right.
In the article it was stated, “Before publishing its report about it, the Daily Caller ALERTED the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which promised that the security problems would be fixed.”
Juan & Rod. Thanks for the information and the reassurance that someone still has a brain that was not eaten by the brain eating amoeba.
The sad commentary is that we have lost so much faith and respect for this government at every level it is easy to contemplate they would act this way.
yet Another THUMBS DOWN TO Frank and patriotheadquarters for not checking facts and regurgitating rumors. You are responsible for what you post on your own blog.
Great, another day in Pair Of Dice, craps. (play on words)

Taking away our rights IS doing something stupid. And it’s time we starting using THORIUM in our power plants.
Sounds like one of those –“The first liar doesn’t stand a chance” — scenarios. Who is really telling it like it is? Perhaps both sides have legitimate concerns. LET’S GET TO THE BOTTOM OF IT. If there is a problem FIX IT! I don’t always trust these “news” reporters. I have even less trust for our current administration and their policies.
Kevin, that 60 minutes link you gave works to get you on the site, but once on it doesn’t let you see the piece on that SEAL team member. Just an FYI. Joe
Guys if I were you, I would verify that “Daily Caller” publication, and the veracity of the article. I work in a nuclear power plant and there is no way you can enter like they say they did. First you need to get granted access which implies all kind of background checks. As a visitor you’ll be assigned a person that will escort you at all times, even the restrooms, and is in charge to open the security doors you will be given access to depending the level given to you. Entering is like going through security in the airport. Everyday I have to pass through an explosive detector, my belongings go through an x-ray scanner and finally a metal detector all these in the custody of several security guards with all the gears on… I mean live ammunition weapons. Afterwards I have to swipe my badge, scan my hand and only then the turnstile door, not just a one arm turnstile but a heavy stainless steel door let you into the plant. The plant is surrounded by a very tall fence, barb wired, sensors. There are lots of bullet proof shacks and towers with guards all over and walking around all the time. And don’t make me mention the cameras everywhere, with live guards watching, not just recording. This is not Fukoshima. In our country the NRC enforces these safety and security protocols all over the nation to the highest standards. Again verify your source… Reporters with cameras. Don’t be naive. In my area every time they publish an article about my plant the show a picture of the stacks of the FOSSIL plant nearby with the smoke coming out… There’re no emissions at my plant or any nuclear power plant but they need to show something to make it more dramatic, that’s why in other plants you see the cooling tower, those hyperbolic towers, with the steam blowing out… but it’s just that water vapor, no radioactive isotopes, or contaminated gases. Again verify your source.
I seriously doubt anyone “drove right up to” the nuclear plant. Yes, some plants allow unguarded access to the parking lot. But, then people have to walk through entrance facilities that are heavily guarded. Any entrant must present a security pass which is only issued after a background check. Commercial nuclear facilities are not soft targets. Your article is very misleading and qualifies as fear-mongering.
I worked a nuke recently and the security was very tight. First was a long background check including pics and prints. Its completely fenced and if you even touch it, alarms sounded. Going into the property is just like an airport. Xrays, sniffers, guards everywhere. Many guards covered the grounds and inside the plant with machine guns. There are also several big machine gun mounts inside and out. All exterior doors and some interior doors have 3/4″ thick steel doors that can be slid over the normal door and they have shooting openings. Hundreds of cameras inside and out. Most of this came after 911. I assumed they were all this way.
If you are a concerned AMERICA YOU probably should watch this 60 MINUTES report.
