Power your devices with running water
Every once in a while I come across something so interesting that I can’t wait to share it with you. Today’s topic is one of those times.
I was very impressed when I first heard about a portable solar charger because one of the downsides to bugging out – or even camping, for that matter – is trying to figure out a way to keep certain items charged, including cellphones, DVD players, Kindles, etc. While I don’t like being dependent upon electronic devices, I do enjoy using them. Portable solar chargers allow us to keep those types of items in our bug-out bags and know that we’ll be able to keep them charged even if the electrical grid goes down for an extended period of time.
But this new item is just as interesting. It’s the first-ever personal, portable hydropower plant, and all you need to juice it up is a body of flowing water, such as a river or stream. One hour in moving water gives it enough power to provide a smartphone with 10 hours of usage.
An obvious question pops up at this point. What if you can’t find a body of moving water? Well, it comes with its own rechargeable battery pack. But if you do have a running brook available, simply remove the inner hydrodynamic turbine, attach it to the string on the integrated power plant, cast it off and watch it spin.
Called Blue Freedom and priced at $319 at retail, it can charge cameras, mp3 players, navigation devices, LED lamps, camping refrigerators, smartphones, tablets and more. It’s less than eight inches in diameter and weighs under a pound, so you’ll barely notice it in your backpack.

This is not a new idea. Been using a hydro generator for years in my mining outfit. The price is high, and yes you can build one realistically for around 100 bucks.
I don’t want devices when I commune with nature.
The price for this is probably a 1500% mark-up. You can make your own from a bicycle generator for about $15.00 or buy something off Amazon for about $25.00 -30.00. Please stop posting such outrageous items.
That is my question….why are all of these solar panels, and this so darn expensive…most people cannot afford them.
Doug, if you can find it on Amazon or make your own – prove it instead of just stating something unverifiable. I couldn’t make one myself without the underlying principles – could you?
I’m sure a big part of the cost of this device is the development and manufacturing costs of any start-up product. If you have a better idea – why not do it right here in America?
