Ammo disappearing faster than a speeding bullet.
If you can’t take people’s guns away, make it impossible for them to use the guns. That seems to be the government’s strategy as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) buys up millions of bullets.
Of course, it’s not just DHS that’s purchasing ammunition. As gun-control legislation increases and fears mount that guns and ammunition will become increasingly more difficult to acquire, gun owners are trying to stockpile ammo as well. Not only are stores having a difficult time keeping ammo on the shelves, some local law enforcement agents are also struggling to find what they need.
Storeowners in New York state, where gun control laws have already been toughened following the tragic shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, and elsewhere, are telling customers they need to arrive within one day of a shipment to get what they want, or are limiting purchases to several boxes per day.
It’s not the first time there’s been a run on ammunition, but some sportsmen are saying that the current ammo shortages are nationwide and are the worst they’ve ever seen. With other states also considering tougher laws, the situation is not likely to improve in the near future.
Have you experienced any recent difficulty in purchasing ammunition for your guns? If so, which particular ammo is proving tough to find? Have storeowners told you why these shortages are happening? Do they have any idea if and when things will return to normal? Please let me know what you are encountering in your neck of the woods.

What are most of us doing today? People alone can have a lot of ammo but by themselves can’t hold off very many “people” who seek to take their lives, guns an ammo etc.
I got an E-Mail today (26 Sep 2016) pointing to this undated article.
One comment mentioned 2015 like it was the future and another predicted something would happen in January 2014.
The above, combined with the fact that I have been tracking ads from Academic Sports, Midway, Cheaper than Dirt, Bass Pro Shop, etc. for the ammo I use (.22LR, .223/5.56, and 380 Auto) in a spreadsheet since June 2016 and have seen no more price fluctuations than food, gasoline, etc. make me skeptical about the hype.
This story is B.S. I have had no trouble buying ammo. I just 400 rounds of .22WMR and a week ago I got 1000 rounds of .22 Long Rifle. No issues.
Every one has ammo on sale with no limits.
Cliff’ you are a damm fool for giving that kind of information to a bunch dignitaries weather they are military or civilian. What were you thinking when you did that? Never mind, I know the answer because I retired from Army and I have see others who would kiss butts just for the brownie Points! Shout your PIE HOLE before you ruin it for the rest!
I heard that there are no more smelters here in the U.S due to EPA. I also hear a lot of ammo will be imported from other countries, as there are not anymore smelters here. by importing it our government can keep track of it and follow it to who ever buys it.
The controversy started when the federal government announced it was buying 5 billion bullets, in three sequential sub-orders of about 1.6 bullets each. This set off the twin public beliefs that the government is purchasing massive amounts of bullets to cause shortages on the civilian market, either for the purpose of backdoor gun control, or to make it easier to implement marshal law for some as of yet unexplained reason. Actually, the total number of rounds purchased from late 2011 to 2013 is less than 800 million for five years of supply. Some have overestimated the round counts by at least 800 million rounds. Current orders mirror prior purchases totaling 766 million rounds from 2006-08 and 454 million in 2003, all over five year periods.
Some believe the DHS is purchasing a wide variety of calibers for training means and they are training for war with the American people using common civilian weapons. The DHS has purchased large quantities of ammunition in a variety of calibers once in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. The orders included .22 LR, .44 Magnum, 7.62 x 39mm, .45 LC, and a variety of other popular calibers to be used at several Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers across the country by a wide variety of agencies and entities.
The government purchases large quantities of ammunition to obtain bulk discounts, locking in prices for years. For instance, a large advance order means DHS can purchase ammunition in 2012 at 2008 prices from a contract secured in 2007.
These federal bulk orders account for less than 1.6% of the annual market share for just domestically produced ammunition, not including foreign imports. For now, price increases and shortages are demand related. The fear of ammunition becoming unavailable makes a relatively small number of citizen shooters hoard, leaving very little for other people.
It’s true that previous bulk purchases by the federal government did not cause this consumer panic, but we are now living in an age of hundreds of unexplained FEMA camps, and non-police federal agencies (like the Postal System and the Dept. of Agriculture) being trained to use firearms, so the continuation of an old pattern raises new suspicions.
I’m not saying the suspicions are wrong or right, but trying to place all of this in perspective. The giant federal purchases are not that unusual in and of themselves. But when you add the facts that bullets are going to agencies other than the FBI and Secret Service (i.e., to agencies that would not seem to need them), the bullets have been reported to be hollow points (why not less expensive FMJ’s for the range?), and the FBI is reportedly practicing with paper targets with pictures of ordinary civilians rather than people holding guns (desensitization to shooting unarmed people), it does make one wonder.
It seems there is evidence pointing in both directions, and it’s hard to know what to make of it. Perhaps the Administration does have evil motives here, and intends to implement an unconstitutional marshal law. In such case, background efforts by the Administration, if there were any, to make the story about the bulk orders high profile would make sense – massive hoarding by a small number of “super-preppers” would leave the majority of civilians nearly defenseless, which is exactly what the fed’s would want.
Buy reloadable ammo. Save your brass. Roll your own. With the cost of components it’s still less than half the price of commercial ammo.
Great idea….if you can find what you need to reload. Primers, powder and bullets are also in short supply. Powder especially is difficult to find, so good luck!
Walmarts in Ct. Have more .22LR than you can shake a stick at….on sale…..5 per customer. 30-06 is another that is plentiful here, and shotgun in 16g and 12g…no problem, no restrictions.
Almost forgot. There is good brass available in the US from Starline, and IMI as well as American companies. If you want high end stuff, Lupua and Nosler are great. The most important thing in reloading is using great care. Inspect the components carefully and know what to look for. Use reliable reloading instructions, and well tested formulas found in reliable reloading books. Lyman, Nosler, Speer, Hornady, Sierra, and most of the powder companies publish professionally tested formulas and specs for reloading your own ammo. Don’t let the government control our freedom. Reagan said “big government is the problem.” And it always is.
In my neck of the prairie ammo is available again, but .22 is especially spendy. I reload and buy cheap ammo with brass cases when I cannot find the components. The Turkish made ZQ1 and the Korean made PMC are good examples of what is available. Good luck finding .308 or .223 unless you buy government surplus military and deal with the primer crimp. Powder is once again available as are bullets. Reloading is the way to go except for .22. Used reloading equipment is available at pawn shops, but I’d buy new reloading dies or dies with known usage. Good luck in 2015 as it will be a challenge with the present government, including both parties.
I have been having trouble finding 22 Magnum ammo. I found some at a local Gun Shop and only bought one box because of the price $19.99 for 50 rounds of hollow points. I also have not seen 22 long rifle in over a year but I already have plenty for my needs for the next several years. Other calibers are showing up but the price is higher than it was a year ago. 45 Long Colt is available but expensive too. I also have the equipment to reload some calibers but have not tried to buy the components in the past several years. I have been buying a couple of boxes of 10 mm here and there along building up a supply for my 10 mm Delta Elite. 9 mm is readily available again now in the 115 grain but 147 grain is hard to come by. I am from the North Texas Dallas/Fort Worth area.
I live in southern Cal. I look weekly for 22lr. Still very hard to find. Drove to northern Cali and same thing. If I buy a new 22, then they can come up with a box or 100 to sell me. On line seems to be my only option.
go to ammo seeker on line and slickguns on line..there is plenty of ammo…and sportsman’s guide..there is plenty of ammo online ..
also sportsmans guide sometimes has free shipping
Be independent learn to make your own. This way if everything falls. you’ll never run out!
I used to reload before my reloading tools disappeared during a divorce. Even if I had the tools , the cost of powder, bullets, primers & shells still adds up to rather high .308 prices. I’ve looked into reloading again several times during the past year or so. Most of the time, I could not get all of the components even at a big outfitter like Cabela’s, because they were out of stock of a least one component everytime I went there.
the shelves in the stores here in south florida are starting to fill up your seeing more calibers on the shelves than the last year.. some of its foreign stuff but its still there… 22Lr is still short in supply and rationed at 3 boxes when available.. everything else no rationing as of Aug of this year… our walmart actually had a sale on their ammo one day 20% so things are looking up retail wise here… still lots of ammo online and im finding the prices better than most retail stores.. gunbot.net and gunbuddy.com has real time prices on the net updated in real time..
REMEMBER THE GUN VOTE IN NOVEMBER
Freedom Munitions has fairly good availability and decent prices (for these days) in both factory loads & reloads, which they call “remanufactured”. Recently, I ordered 1000 rounds of reman. 9mm for $202.00 with free shipping for any order over $200 and I just ordered 500 rounds of reman. .223 for $160.00, including shipping. Occasionally, as noted above, they have a “free shipping” sale, which makes the deal even better.
Learn how to reload. I’ve learned how to reload .22lr. It’s not easy but when the SHTF want are you going to do? Between my brother and I we have about 500K of ammo and about 300lbs of lead and 400 lbs of powder. Beat the forces of evil at their own game.
How do you reload 22 lr? I am truly impressed. I thought you had to do it on a mass scale with big machines that can take a hit from somewhat easily detonated rimfire ammo.
Superdave
I think he’s full of shit! I’ve never heard of anyone reloading 22Lr.
400 lbs. of gun powder would reload what about 10 million rounds. Just wondering how much he’s really doing?
I have been saying this for the last twenty years: “Give everyone a gun; just don’t give them the ammo for it.” I was in a conference in Washington D.C. When I said this in front of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and some congressmen. The topic was how to disarm civilians.
Now before you jump on my lily pad. This conference was aimed at Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan and the vast ordinance that has saturated the region. When I made this statement, there was a lot of laughter coming from the audience. As I went on to explain my statement, I could see that my points were hitting home. I suggested that the ammo be changed. The primer and load can be altered to affect the way the round is discharged when fired. The round doesn’t necessary has to have that punch that it has now. It can be cost effective by decreasing the charge, the load, in each round. Instead of a round going down range hundreds of yards; it will drop dramatically over the same distance thus becoming less effective, meaning that lives can be saved. I recommended that a thesis ability study be made which will provide the necessary experts backing up what I have told the Joint Chief of Staff. The audience wasn’t laughing at me now. By changing how the ammo is constructed and limited the availability of ammo you will limit the harm and damage the general population can do to an armed force, plus it is cost effective. I also recommend that the US troops maintain the high standard it has enjoyed with its ammo and that it alone be not altered. This will put the United States in a position of superiority.
After my 45 minute speech, I received a robust applause. When I walked off the stage whereby I was surrounded by a lot of dignitaries asking a lot of questions and asking for my opinions. This conference helped launch my military career. Never in my wildest dreams would I believe that my suggestions would be used against the people in my own country. But times are changing, how things are done and against who, and who is considered to be the enemy has also changed.
I was horrified when I received a call from the 4th PSYOP Group, in Texas, requesting to use my loud speakers against the Branch Davidian Compound. I told them that they can not use any military equipment against American citizens on American soil without a Presidential Order. They went to the Texas National Guard to get their military equipment and you saw how they used their tanks and teargas. I started to notice a change in our Government. They were starting to targeting the citizens in this country with a military response.
So be prepared if you know what is best for you. You can not count on common sense or decency anymore. Your government believes that it does not owe you a break. You work for the government and that is how they like it. You pay taxes don’t you? you work don’t you? It is how they will control you.
So what to do about the lack of available ammunition in this country. Here is my suggestion for you folks. Find someone that makes his own ammunition. See if he or she is willing to make you some too. Chances are you will get a better deal than if you go to the store and buy it yourself. As for me, I am learning to make my own, in the caliber that I need too. It is very easy to do and no one but you knows what I am doing. I learned a long time ago, you can not depend on anyone except yourself; because you are the only one that can let yourself down for nor being prepared.
where do You get powder to reload? RD
Folks when it comes time to vote lets all remember who not to vote for. Also don’t forget the stores that charged us 5 times the amount. Boycott then if you can.
William
I live in N.C. And it is almost impossible to get 22.long ammo any more. Most of my ammo I get on line.
And yes I am stock piling mine.
So?. This is old news! Three years old at least and every word true.
I was told by a gun store owner that the govt is operating drones that use .22 LR. If you go to Wikiarms.com, you can see up to the minute ammo prices from a lot if not all websites. At least allows you to order easily but doesn’t help the price. I firmly believe the government is trying to make our guns into “art” but as long as I can melt and mold lead and make my own gunpowder, I’ll have a weapon of some kind… one shot at a time. Maybe another “shot heard around the world”
That is exactly what the United States needs. We need to revolt at the polls and push every old politician (Good or Bad) out of office, put in new blood and revoke their live long benefits. Our Founding Fathers meant government to be an opportunity to serve this nation not to benefit oneself at the expense of “We the People”!
Getting these misfit politicians out of office by vote is not impossible but it’s going to take a lot of work on convincing people to see the truth. Most who keep voting these back into office have been brainwashed by the media and the lies they hear. Then there is voter fraud to contend with. If amnesty is passed by Obama, all the millions of illegals who are here will be voting Democrat. The power will be handed back to the liberals once again.
Canada has lots of Winchester .22 LR ammo. Where do you suppose it’s coming from. The Cabella’s in Saskatoon had shelves bulging with it!
I have had 20,000 rds. of .22 BO for over a year from a distribator. They did notify my of .223 was in which I didn’t need by then, so I passed on it so someone else could get it. I know nice guys finish last.
I’m a nice guy too but, I’ve found nice guys don’t finish last, they don’t even get in the race. I’m thinking the lack of ammo is really just another case decreasing supply to make more demand. It’s a tactic that other’s are catching on to in order to make more money.
Easy answer for .22lr…. What round is and was the round you were taught how to shoot with? .22 caliber is that round. It was cheap and simple to start teaching our kids the fundamentals of shooting without scaring them. Its hard to find the most popular calibers in Virginia as well.
I read, recently, that the United States Post Office just purchased one million rounds of ammo. Is this true? If so, what is their justification?
Go to infowars.com and see with your own eyes and ears What and Why and WHO is behind this!!
Until enough of you can get together and start up an ammo manufacturing plant, how about reloading?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSy89BU1djU
That is Very costly and you must know what you are doingalso gun powder ie becoming hard to get
Anybody out there want to start up an ammo factory? Is it really that difficult to manufacture ammo?
No it is not difficult to manufacture ammo. You have two roads. First, you can buy a fully automatic manufacturing line but that takes a good amount of capital, a temperature and humidity controlled building(s) and a source of the raw materials – brass, powder, bullets and primers – which may a problem all in itself. Plus all the necessary licences and BATFE approval.
Second, you can start your own reloading operation, by hand and done by individuals, in a safe and controlled space – however, you will have to get a Reloading FFL from the BATFE if you plan to sell the ammo as a manufacturer; and you con’t want to be selling it without that FFL and appropriate licences.
Then of course, you could form a ‘club’ of reloaders who share equipment and facilities to load their own, and do it like they ‘finish’ the 80% AR15 lowers and 1911 frames. As long as someone is their who is using the ammo and has a ‘hands-on’ participation, it’s legal – as far as I am aware (check with a 2nd-Amendment-friendly lawyer in your state).
It would seem to me that this would be a great field for someone (several people) to start up an ammo factory.
I would be willing to join
New York State and its Governor Andrew Cuomo passed the “Safe Act” over night just after the school shooting in Connecticut , the law was very wide in its scope . The ban includes #1 no removable magazines over ten rounds , at first it was seven , #2 if a rifle has a removable mag. it cannot have any features associated with a ” assault rifle ” such as a flash suppressor ,pistol grip ,bayonet lug ,collapsible stock etc. . The only rifle that can hold more than ten rounds is a .22 caliber with a tube fed magazine ,no other caliber. They also put in the law that as of Jan. 15 you could no longer get ammo through the mail. They are also working on a system where you have to call in any ammunition buys to check your legality to purchase ammo, ,how ever the system is not up and running yet and I am sure there will be a limit on the amount you can purchase, if you can find any. Supply of ammo is almost non-existent especially .22 caliber. When and if you are able to find any ammo you can expect to pay high dollar for off brand ( junk ) ammo. N.Y.S. already has some of the toughest laws in the country concerning personal protection. Those of us who are ” lucky ” enough to live here have to wait on average 6 months to possibly get a pistol permit, get a NICS check for any long gun etc. all other forms of personal protection are also banned such as pepper spray, collapsible wands, any electrical devices such as stun guns and tasers. The majority of N.Y.S. is rural and there is absolutely no way our Sheriffs or State Police could reach a family in distress in time to help even as good as they are. Basically N.Y.S. is run by the extremist liberals in New York City and our liberal politicians in our capitol in Albany with no consideration for the rest of the states population. P.S. If Andrew Cuomo runs for President in 2016 and you vote for him you might as well throw your guns etc. in the garbage and get ready to fight off any person who tries to do your family harm with sticks and stones. God bless us all!
When our so-called “leaders” pass laws that are unfair, un-Constitutional and just plain flat out evil, we have a right and a duty to NOT OBEY THEM. That’s what the Minutemen did, its what Gandhi did, its was MLK did, and it is what we all need to be doing. I am heartened to see that many of the citizens of the up state are quietly or not so quietly telling the fascist dictator in Albany that they will not comply with his Gestapo laws. All hail New York state patriots! Down with all the ObamaNazi thought police!
Ideals Mastering Power Creating All Life GOD IS
It went from bad to worse and then eased off a little here in West Texas. Our WalMart has always had massive amounts of 270 (never seen anyone buy it) but other calibers are scares. .25/.32/.380 rarely are available as is .38 &.308 but .22LR is never available (unless you are lucky enough to be there when one or two boxes of 50 arrive (Gone in a second, ditto .357). We’ve had some luck recently with 30.06, 223/5.56, 9mm, .40 & .45 & prices at WalMart haven’t gone up all that much unlike Academy & the Gun/Pawn Shops (.22 if any comes in is about $4 for a box of 50). Most stores still have a limit of one box per caliber per day for hard to find .22, but most rifle & pistol calibers are available (far higher prices) at Academy & gun shops.
Frank,
I live in Arizona and things are getting back to normal as far as centerfire ammo goes but rimfire is still hard to find. I have been buying on line. for example I was able to purchase 975 rounds of FEDERAL AUTOMATCH .22LR for $54. yesterday. Cabelas, Bass proshops and walmart all have a limmit of 1 box per customer per day on rimfire but Cabelas has lifted there limmits on all other ammo. The word is that all the government agencies that were stock piling except for the DHS have stopped purchasing. I was told by a trusted sorce that a number of government agencies ordered millions of .223, 556, .308, 9mm., .45acp, and .22LR for (training purposes). What a joke!!! I guess they think the American people are idiots, and they are right about all the gullable suckers on the left that believe all president Obuttheads lies because to just refer to them as idiots would be a under statement!!! I was also told that the ammo manufacturers were bound by the government to supply 2/3rds. of all there supply to the government until there contracts were filled. The manufacturers had to shut down there rimfire lines and convert them to centerfire in order to fill the contracts and from what I am getting now the contracts have mostly been completed but this is why the rimfire still requires some leg work to find.
One should only follow laws of morrality and dignity and never the laws made for power and greed by corrupt government!!!
Thanks and have an awesome day.
Brad
There is an alternative that uses nailgun blanks to fire a muzzleloader. See blanklock.com. A revolver version is under production, and a repeating rifle is in the concept stage.
380 are never on the shelf when I look for them.
I am finding 380 is extremely hard to get a the local ammo stores. I am finding it at guns shows though. In Denver there is a very good place to get ammo that not too many people know about.
Shortages are systemic across the nation..NC included…..
All governmental agencies are getting their own SWAT and privatized security forces….internment camps are being built everywhere….military transport armored vehicles are being readied for use on the streets in America…ammo is being bought up by the government to keep it out of the citizens hands and to arm all these new para-military units that are being formed……so:
The equation is:
Dollar devaluation= Hyperinflation= Economic collapse = No more government handouts=Anger
and hunger=Riots and chaos in the streets = National emergency declared= Martial law instated
= Suppression of the citizenry by any means necessary=Total absolute control by the socialist
regime……which has been planned for 100 years…in 1913 the Fed was created to enslave the
people and eventually take over the US by using debt and eventually come to this point….
The government knows that 17 trillion dollars in debt can never be paid back…there’s not enough money in circulation to ever pay the interest on the total debt, that’s by design….
There is not enough gold to back the amount of dollars that are in the world even if a gold standard was being contemplated which it is not…..
The dollar will lose it’s status as the world’s reserve currency very soon….
So do the math, add it up and come up with your own conclusions….but IMO it’s gonna be real bad and it’s right around the corner….look at all the signs, they are hidden but staring us right in the face….the collapse is here and now…look, study real history and alternative economics and you shall see…..
Every other issue that comes up i.e. recent government shutdown, etc. is just a diversionary tactic to keep the people in the dark…
The math adds up to only one thing: total economic collapse….
online seems to be the best source . go to cheaper than dirt . com and get what you need but be prepared to pay for it big time
I’d just like to say that thru experience I’ve learned that CTD absolutely rapes you on shipping costs. I don’t even look at their site unless I cannot find what I’m looking for anywhere else. I use Midway, CDNN, or SKDTac a good part of the time for parts and accessories and BulkAmmo.com for ammo
No 22 ammo anywhere here in Iowa. The local Theisens store gets about 1 brick of 22 ammo per week and the store manager says 2 boxes of 50 per customer. However I have been there when the truck is being unloaded and seldom does the 22 ammo make it to the front. When it does make it to the shelf it is almost $7.00 for 50 rounds.
I have had to curb my grandsons shooting even though I bought 10 bricks before this all started.
Almost everyone I know has acquired an AR15 and ammo. The general opinion of everyone I talk to Democrats as well as Republicans are unified in saying they will NOT get our guns. The young military guys that come home from duty are in agreement with their up bringing.
The general feeling is that The United Nations has absolutely no right in altering our constitution in any way. They need to think twice before they involve themselves with our gun rights.
BEWARE of the call to a Constitutional Convention, which has been sufficiently ratified by the US States already – this election will result in enough anger to sell the notion that the electoral college must be abolished and, therefore, the convention must convene, thus, our founding document will be re-written and our country gutted by those who guide non-governmental organizations.
Dear Frank,
The story I am getting from one NRA gun instructor is that huge offers for ammo are happening
at the manufacturing level amounting to $million trades and therefore the public in only receiving
the excess.
Makes sense to me, since I honestly believe Soro’s is behind Obama and the destruction
and eventual take over or destruction of America. When evil has a front and center “Puppet”,
take over is immanent.
Georgia has the same problems as you have mentioned. My only recommendation is that
persistence can eventually pay off.
I know people who reload and they can’t get primers nor can those providing reloads.
This is not an accident–this is a planned and well executed means to take the Second Amendment and stick it in our ear.
Apparently, at this moment we have the power, yet we must maintain our own well thought
out plan in order to keep our freedoms in tact and out of the hands of the tyrannical.
Be Blessed and keep up the good work.

Another quick comment; If the federal government is buying all of this ammo so we can’t purchase it they are using our tax money to do so. They are public servants. They are using our own money against us. As Americans we should be enraged. So much for serving the public.
I have traveled all over the Midwestern and western states and have not found any .22 caliber shells. If the government is buying up all the ammo what is their motive for doing so? What are they doing with it? We may be dealing with a dictatorship that may be a very clear and present danger to our freedoms. What can we do about it? Why .22 caliber?
Our wall mart on Colo has 22s but only got about 30 minutes after they hit the shelf, and only about one day a week.
Nancy Pelosi was quoted as saying, something like, “Our goal is to turn all guns into art, hanging on the wall. The Constitution may allow citizens the right to bear arms, but it doesn’t state that the ammo has to be available”.
go to Sportsmanguide.com. they have some ammo. I am on their email list when they get shipments of ammo. A little more expensive but not terrible. Should become a member for $30 though…you save on other survival stuff too.
both WA.and OR. are very hard to buy more than 100 rounds, 357, 40 & 45 cal very difficult to buy and prices are very inflated since gun shops don’t have enough ammo to to sell so they inflate prices to cover overhead and stay in business. So much for “small business survival”.
.223, 22 rim fire and 9mm seem to be almost impossible to get unless you’re extremely
lucky. It seems that all ammo has been hard to find except the very unusual calibers or
shotgun shells. I, like many others have begun to reload my own ammo and can easily
adapt from one caliber or bullet grain to another, whatever is available.
Central Alabama, I have experienced no problems what so ever, you see I kinda thought this was going to happen an so I stockpiled when Obama first went into office!
I advised my friends to do the same but you know I was the conspiracy theorist back then but I’m not the nutcase they thought I was.
I have actually shared with some of them,(more to rub it in than to be a good guy) especially when I ask them what wal-mart doesn’t have this stuff!
I also stockpiled 1500lbs of lead and bullet molds for all my rifles along with primers and powder.;
I live in Washington state, and lived in Arizona when Janet Napolitano was Governor there. I have carried for over thirty years now, and we have a severe shortage of ammo here. I carry a Springfield XD40, and my wife has a Rossi .38 spl. I have only three magazines of the Hornady Critical Defense ammo I carry, and my wife cannot practice (nor I) to keep our perishable skills from deteriorating. DHS should be required to publicly explain why they needed 1.6 billion rounds of various ammo. We need to vote out the politicians bewhind the gun control garbage, and ensure the replacements that they work for us, not the other way around. Gun owners need to vote in a united block.
Every time another Gun or box of Ammo is bought in this country, another Vote is cast my friend.
EVERY STATE NEEDS to have the RIGHT (LAW on the BOOKS) to do a RECALL ELECTION……so when these phony ass LIARS SAY one thing and then do another, FIRE their butt, like the 2 democrats in Colorado just got FIRED!!! I DO NOT CARE to BE just another COMMUNIST /RADICAL ISLAM /ANIMAL country!!!
Glad I am in Texas. We Texans are having it hard to find ammo and reloading supplies. But, Texans will go around somehow and we will have ammo if all else fails. We might start our own factory.
I have had to work a bit harder to find what I need. But I have never failed to find what I wanted. 22 lr, 22 mag, 25apc, 380, 45 apc, 7.62×39, 7.62×51, and so on. I have serveral thousand round stored in a number of safe places. You can find what you want on line from places like Gunbrokers, Sportsmans guide, Lucky gunner, Cheaper the Dirt and Natches etc. Nixa gun and pawn in Nixa Missouri has nver run out of stock, but you will pay a little higher price then at your discounters. I tryed to sell then some 308 wins and they had 308 FMJ by the crate full even on the belt. You just cant be pickey, if what you can get is Tulammo, Brown Bear or Silver bear go a head and buy what you can afford, beside they shoot just fine, There not match grade but for polking holes in paper there just fine. Your big box stores like Bass Pro get picked over every morning so I don’t even go there to find ammo. Hope this helps, stop crying and start buyint!
There are a lot of people stocking up on Ammo myself included, every chance I get I buy another 100 rounds od 9mm 147 gr.. use the 115 for target shooting. but am getting ready for an

Have a wonderful day
order direct from offshore mfrs. there is no shortage,,, just BO & gang!
their thugs are everywhere in the land of ‘No Longer Free’ OR
COME-on DOWN-to Tx,,, plenty ammo here!
22 long rifle ammo has been exceptionally hard to come by and so as certain popular reloading supplies such as 30 caliber siearra 165 grain game kings and 168 grain match king bullets. I just finished loading sierra bullets into new winchester casings at a cost of 1 dollar per round. that sounds a little high but I like the sierra bullets in my M1/a1’s and in my browning A bolt.
redding, CA—– the biggest sporting goods store in town gets it’s shipments in on wednesday’s—if your not there on wed., you probably won’t get what your looking for….. i’ve been there first thing wed. morning for the past 3 weeks looking for 30-30 shells…. not 1 box came in…. also almost impossible t get for myself is 22’s and 38’s….. seems nuts, i’ve never seen anything like it and i’m in my mid 60’s…. i’ve had pretty good luck with “CHEAPER THAN DIRT” getting ammo, but they’re out of alot too….
I found 12 gauge and .22 @ Ammunitionstore.com, I cannot find any ammo locally, but the .22 and 12 gauge is most important for me.
LIKE I HAVE BEEN SAYING,BEFORE, WE NEED TO RID OURSELVES OF THE TRASH IN OUR GOVERNMENT, WHICH IS INCLUDING OBAMA, AND HE NEEDS TO BE IMPEACHED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! WE THE PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY NEED TO WAKE UP AND SOON, AS OUR COUNTRY AS WE KNOW IT, WILL BE GONE FOREVER!
The old adage of history repeats itself is true. When the stock market crash of 1930’s happened, what happened to the people? they suffered intolerably! Today, with so many Citizens owning guns,I dread another Civil war. Thats probably why, IMHO,DHS went out and ordered a shit load of Hollow points, by the way, cannot be used on people, outside the good ol’e USA,it’s against the Geneva convention!!!!! I’m in the San Diego area, Walmart are starting to get in ammo, where?
you just got to get there very early and be lucky.
let us learn to make our own bullets, not easy BUT an option
22 caliber,& 223 caliber I have experienced to be nearly impossible to get. Other calibers are similar, I’m sure. I wish the manufacturers could refuse to sell the large orders to Home Land Insecurity. But, by law, they are required to sell at prices equal to or lower than they sell to any other entity. Plus, the government can issure an order to mfrs. to make their order first. I have participated in such a buy \ sell situation on a national security construction job. They gave me a number to give to the mfr. confirming priority for my placed order. They can eliminate small sales to private businesses by issuing a “priority” large order to paralize the manufacturer.
Thank you for the useful information. I will try and get some shotgun ammo and let you know how it goes. I am in Glastonbury CT. Once again thank you.
22 rimfire ammunition has not been available. Some independent stores say they cant get any shipments. others get sporadic shipments. people wait from early morning to grab shipments from big box stores such as Walmart, Bass proshops, academy. this has been a problem for many months-plenty of time for production to be ramped up to meet demand.
I live outside San Antonio, Texas and have found a few obscure sources for ammo. Most of the major retailers have been mostly sold out of the popular calibers, .40, .45, 9mm.
I have bought some ammo on GunBot dot net and have saved money even with the shipping over what I would have paid locally. You have to watch the prices.
Springfield Oregon.
9mm almost impossible to get unless you waite in line hours before store opens on the delivery day(if you know what day that is). Only the first 5 or 6 buyers in line aare ble to purchase because of the limited supplies of ammo.
22 rim fire is almost impossible to get. When you find some to purchase it is very expensive.
I never thought I would not be able to walk into the local sporting goods store & pick up a brick of 22 bullets.
I have been told there are networks of ammo purchasers in my area were individuals are checking stores daily for ammo. When ammo is located they call their friends & the ammo is gone within one hour of arriving. I don’t know if this is the cause of the shortage but it sure makes it tough on the rest of us wanting some ammo to shoot but have to work to make a living.
I’m looking to buy a rifle that uses the 7mm Winchester Mag. Seem like every store including Wal Mart always has these shells. I don’t know anything about them but they are available just about everywhere when everything else is gone. Anybody know what a good rifle for these shells?
I go to Swains in Port Angeles, WA to buy ammo. Every time they receive a shipment , it is gone in short time. They limit you to two boxes but most of the buyers simply bring in relatives or friends and return as many times as the supply last. So if you don’t get there about the same time as the shipment, you will be out of luck.
.45, 30-06, 12 GA are all in very low supply here in Oklahoma. Store owners have said because we have a lower cost for ammo people buy it here and sell in other states for a profit.??
All of the gun stores have shortages on the most popular rounds, both pistol and rifle. There is plenty of shotgun ammo available. The gun stores are drastically raising their prices on the ammo that is hardest to keep in stock. Even Walmart is hoarding the ammo that they get in, but at least they don’t raise the prices like the independent gun stores do. They do limit the buyer to three boxes of any caliber per customer per day. I have experienced Walmarts that the employees are saving the ammo for friends and family. I recently went into a Walmart that had just gotten their shipment of ammo in the middle of the night and put it on the shelves, but when I tried to buy it, they told me that they had a policy that they couldn’t sell ammo between the hours of 11:00 pm. and 7:00 am. When I showed up the next morning at 7:00 am. they said it had all been sold, with no other explanation. I asked in another Walmart if that was their policy and the manager said no it wasn’t.
In Pa., .22 ammo is almost impossible to find–for the last TWELVE MONTHS. Since .22 ammo is hard to buy, the question is: “With .22 ammo manufacturers ABLE to make about 20 million rounds PER DAY, why can’t everyone get 100 rounds per month ?” The .22 ammo manufacturing equipment is ONLY able to make .22’s—-nothing else. This has nothing to do with hoarding by our citizens–and everything to do with our over reaching Federal Government. I have directed these questions at gun dealers, stores, and others—only to find that no one knows.
You touched on the Feds buying ammo—hollow point ammo. If you are not sure who that
ammo is meant for, any citizen only needs to look in a mirror.
Sahuarita Az. just south of tucson 22 shells are almost impossible to purchase I hear from friends larger caliber are also hard to find avaliable evev reloading supplies out entire goverment should be fired if the working people knew how to make this happen it would larry younf
.223, 9mm and .380 boxes are limited. Even my 30-30 are limited.
I have found many web sites out of ammo that use to have it just a year a go. I believe we need the NRA to help STOP this government abuse, it is Holder and his super rich government buddies doing this, so let’s all campaign to STOP this now. Because if we don’t’ we will have only those crazy and illegal people getting ammo and Drug dealers who can afford to pay the high prices for ammo buying it and gangs will have the advantage over us Good citizens. Also America was built on freedom and this includes the freedom to be able to go to gun store and buy ammo at a competitive price, NOW the government buying out ammo to push prices higher, and if we get attorneys involved I am sure there are many illegal things the Government is doing by purchasing all the ammo and storing it! THIS MUST STOP NOW!!! We must stay together on this issue and fight the corrupt US government and let us have ammo for our guns at competitive low prices.
ONE more note CARS & TRUCKS kill more people than Gun by 10-1 ration!!!
I seen with my own eye’s concrete barriors placed to block off federal parks in maryland over a week before the government shutdown, this tells me they were planning to shut down. I believe they are also planning to default, its nothing more than a political play to execute an agenda. I have personaly contacted via: phone winchester and remington and asked if homeland security was buying up all the ammunition, they told me that they were not buying anymore than they did in the past. Do i believe this (Hell No). Ammo is very hard to get in maryland 22s – 22 mag,223 -7.62×39 – 9mm – 40cal – 45s – 357mag – 44mag – 308. Everyone says we will have to change things with elections to get this country back on track but i fear that this country will not survive untill election day. There are to many warning signs.
I used to be able to go to Crossroads of the West gun shows and pick up a box of 500 rounds of 115gr 9mm ammo for around $50, with several vendors on site. More recently, around 2 years ago, it was more than double that price, and there was a huge line for the one vendor that was selling ammo. I stopped going after that, not willing to fight to be served nor pay the high price. Since then, I have tried Wal Mart, and a couple of local gun shops and ranges, with little success in even finding ammo. My last purchase was by accident, when I overheard a Wal Mart rep telling a customer on the phone that their order of ammo would be available around 4-5:00. I went back at around 5:00 and they had a relatively small amount of various sizes, but I was only allowed to buy 150 rounds for $50. I live in Santee, CA., just east of San Diego. We were victims of the Santana High School shootings in 2001, but never changed our views on guns or gun ownership. I feel that the anti-gun advocates will do anything they can think of to limit or eliminate our second amendment rights, and I have joined the NRA, and support any group that will fight for our right and our protection under the constitution.
PURCHASING AMMO: It has been difficult to purchase ammunition for the most popular calibers. Especially, for pistols. I believe that the manufactures are working overtime and trying to put ammo on the shelves, look at their profits, but people are still in a hoarding mood. Afraid that they will not have any. Even the people who only shoot 5 or 6 bullets a year or less are buying box’s of 250 just to make sure they will have some in the future. That is the reason that their isn’t ammo for all to purchase. I reload my own but for a white I couldn’t buy powder. I had the primers, bullets and cases but no powder, that is now easing up. I shoot competition and use more ammo than most people but it’s out there but you will have to pay a premium for it. That is the sad part, the prices are twice as much as they were before. I doubt that they will ever be the price they used to be, to much profit for the sellers. The hardest ammo for me to purchase are 22’s , as I refuse to pay , apx 12-14c per shell, that is almost what it cost me to load for my 9mm . That now costs me almost double what it cost a year ago. I truly believe the manufactures are doing the best they can but until people purchase what they really need or are going to use in the near future, and STOP HOARDING AMMO, it will not change.
one thing no one wants to say is that if anything happens and I pray that it does not you can always use what ammo you have to take ammo off the ones that come to get your guns or put you in a camp
cant seem to find 22 shells
I tried to buy both .22/.25 cal. shells at a local sporting store and left my name and phone for them to call when more comes in. I’ll be checking in weekly.
The shortage started Thanks Giving 2012, for certain calibers its nation wide, I know we just got back from 7 weeks on the road traveling across the nation. Shopping for ammo as we went. Walmart, Bass Pro and Cabellas are our favorite stops. Brought back several thousand rounds, mostly 22 and 9mm. But if you can’t travel there are several websites where ammo can be bought in large quantities, just google bulk ammo for sale. It’s not cheap but can be had. If you still want cheap you will have to camp out at Walmart !
22LR, 22mag, 30-30, 44mag have been consistently hard for me to find. On occasion I am unable to get 9mm or 300winmag, so I just buy them when they show up.
Now that we have a temporary government shutdown, will the rest of us have a brief chance to buy ammo?
Brass for 308, 270, 45ACP, serria 168 gr BTHP, for the 308 Win. 223 in any form that is affordable. 22 Mag, 17 HMR are hard to find, I was buying them for 11.95 a box now they are 31.00 a box. if you find them! And forget buying 44 magnums. they are out of this world! PRICY! If I weren’t a reloader I would have very little ammo at all.
Have trouble getting 22LR and .380 and when you find them prices a through the roof.
There is a problem all over the USA, but there is still taking (military)out the nut out in the middle east .Got to get the ammo from somewhere and the government has not got and contract for the ammo, I believe. The gov’t is on the open market, what better for the manufactures. They have a up front income of million of rounds and they will retool thier equipment to take the greater profit than the less. The US military uses 5.56,223,308,9mm ,45and others. That pretty much takes the the bulk of the ammo being in a high demand in the civillian market. In my opinion capitalism is still working, If I was a of the one or more round being used by the military and was guarantee d big money now or waiting a month or two the get a order of a a few thousand of round, HuH, What better?
At the gun shop yesterday. Our conversation got dreary about availability, he can’t get tips for reloads, and I said what about us recreational shooters and he sadly reply’s get a bb.
One of the things that really make me angry is the fact that those who sell at gun shows are charging over 2x’s the real price of ammo. I was at a gun show in Waverly IA last week and everyone selling ammo was practicing price gouging in a huge way. A brink of 22LR shells were $80.00 at each table where they were for sale. The ammo I was going to buy and didn’t was over $40.00 for a box of 20 308 shells.
The sellers who price gouge are as bad or worse than the government and their theivery.
It is almost impossible to get any ammo where I live. I can drive over an hour away and sometimes get what I need.
It is so hard to find 22LR, 9mm, 45 cal, 40 cal, 22-250, 308, 380 and so on, not that I need any of these, but these are ones I have not seen on local shelves in over a year. I get the same song and dance from any Walmart I visit. They don’t know why there is no ammo to be had. Of course we all know they have a store policy that says they may not say what they feel or think. One that I seem to see on most shelves is 12ga slugs and buck shot. I think I would rather be shaot at my a 9mm than a close up shot with a shot gun. OUCH!!
in pa 9mm and 30carbine is impossible to find
What is the email for ammo supplies?
Do you know where homeland security got the funds to buy the ammo they got it from the Chinese bankers to train soldiers to secure their property once we default on the debts we owe , Obama really screwed us this time he can’t keep on borrowing without paying back, have watched the world trade buildings 5 countries have pulled their gold bullion out of the USA the buzz is the federal reserve going to collapse arround January 2014 & China will want their collateral
Hey Frank, In Iron Mountain, Mich. My dealer says it will be at least a year before the stockpiles improve. This is a scary time indeed.
Yep, that’s the case in Wisconsin as well.
The folks in DC are really getting under my skin.
If they keep this crap up, it won’t look good for them on election day, will it!
Well anyway, i’m sure mad as hell what they have done so far, i sure hope they wake up soon.
I can’t believe that they don’t realize what they are really doing, and how it has made millions of
people feel, about the people that have put them in office.
Is it really the case of: the blind leading the blind?
Just amazing!

Who would have ever thought years ago, that 22lr shells would hard (impossible) to come by? Could it be because there are probably more of these weapons around in most homes in this country? It seems that it is now not enough to be under economical control. Without ammo, we are left with overpriced clubs.
the other day I found that the Wal-mart store I was in was out of all ammo except shot gun shells
In Nh most ammo is difficult at best to get,but 22lr and 30.30 are close to impossible, these are not typical military or police rounds, why the shortage? Making me very nervous!
The big problem is store employees hording the ammo & selling at a higher price else where.
Check out the current issue of the USCCA Concealed Carry Magazine. On page 8 there is an article entitled “Don’t Believe the Hype”. It is a well-considered and researched article about the causes of the ammunition shortage. The article is written by Kevin Michalowski who is the Editor of the magazine One cause cited is our continued support of two wars, others include supplying our allies, expending ammo for military exercises and training (they use prodigious amounts. There are others. Read the article! Check out what you read on the Internet – much of it is speculation disguised as reporting.
In my area all hunting calibers, both rifle and shotgun are in short supply. All the popular handgun calibers are very hard to find. I can get snake shot and a few oddball foreign calibers. I live near a Cabela’s. Last I heard they restricted sales to 5 boxes a customer a day. In my local area I can get one box of each caliber in stock a day. I do not think it will get any better any time soon, if ever. I also recommend you consider joining USCCA so you will get the magazine. It’s great.
I have not been able to by the following calabers of ammo in stores for at least a year:
* 9 MM
* 380
