Users rave about Diatomaceous Earth’s health benefits
Recently it’s been about essential oils. A while back we were hearing a lot about colloidal silver…. These natural remedies are still in the news and still controversial – with supporters praising its health benefits and the medical community warning against its dangers – but it doesn’t seem to be discussed as much as it once was.
Now what I’m hearing about is Diatomaceous Earth (DE). Those who use it for health benefits sing its praises, while those in traditional healthcare settings warn about its harmful effects when it’s breathed in. Before we examine those views, let’s take a look at what it is.
Diatomaceous Earth is a soft, sedimentary rock that can crumble easily into a fine, white or off-white powder. It contains the fossilized remains of hard-shelled algae. It has many uses, including as a filtration aid, a mild abrasive in toothpaste and an insecticide. It is also found in cat litter and dynamite, and can be used as a growing medium in hydroponic gardens.
Now, normally none of us would think about eating cat litter or dynamite. But the fact is, DE is already found in a number of grain-based foods we eat because the food is stored in DE in order to keep bugs from eating the grain. DE serves to dehydrate the bugs to the point of death, but does nothing harmful to us. Some farmers feed it to their animals for the purpose of killing bugs that those animals have ingested.
Strong believers in Diatomaceous Earth consume one-quarter cup of it daily after mixing it with their vegetable juice or coconut water and honey. They claim it cleanses the colon and controls parasites, and is an excellent way to detox your body by ridding it of fungi, bacteria and even the residue from prescription drugs. Some say it lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, adds energy, and helps hair and nails grow faster.
One of the reasons Diatomaceous Earth has been called harmful for humans is its crystalline silica content. For example, pool-grade DE (used for pool filters) contains up to 70 percent crystalline silica. Working with it all day and breathing it in has been linked to cancer. But food-grade DE is very different – it contains less than 1 percent crystalline.
In addition to consuming it, you can use DE for its more traditional purpose of pest control. Sprinkle it around windows and doors to kill ants and spiders, as well as around your garden plants. Add some to your garbage bins and your compost piles as well. If you’re a true DIYer, you can use it in your homemade toothpaste and deodorant.
OK, if DE is so good for you, why have many people never heard of it? One answer could be that the medical community doesn’t want us to know how something so inexpensive can be so beneficial. They’d rather we buy their expensive medicines, even if they are more harmful to us in the long run.

DE is a great product. I am a distributor for PermaGuard. For some reason I haven’t had any requests for it. I still have around 15 or 20 50# bags. I use it on my dog, feed it to my chickens and dog mixed in their food. I dust the chicken coop, nest boxes, and any areas where the chickens dust themselves. I keep forgetting to take it myself but I use to with no ill effects. It is best to also take flaxseed oil while taking DE as DE will constipate you. Remember: DE absorbs moisture. I have used D E for 2 years or so, in the morning with applesauce, as I cannot handle it in a drink. I just drink extra water, along with breakfast. Upon ordering a new food grade bag, I read the fine print again, and realized it was competing with the way I was taking my meds. Now I need to make some alterations so as not to cancel out the RX benefits. I take it primarily because it is said to carry away the toxins we take in- in daily living. I am all for that, in addition to its other benefits.

Sprinkle food grade DE on dry cat food to get rid of tape worms. It has no taste or smell, but the cats will go nuts because it looks different! Don’t give them anything else, and they will eventually eat it. Do that for a couple of weeks and repeat at the first sign of worm segments.

I have a co-worker told me that he and his wife uses DE for their health issues. He told me that DE help his in gestation and flem problems. I will try this out for myself and see what happens.
I tried diatomaceous earth to kill ants. It didn’t work.
May need to add sugar to it to attract the ants
I’ve been using DE for years. It’s a formidable parasite remover for me, pets, and livestock. Also use it in my garden. I consume it in a tonic of 2t DE, 2t cider vinegar, and 2t honey in a cup of water(heated). Noticed substantial hair and nail growth. No illness for a long time. Thanks for the heads up though.
The small farmer I Buy my greens and eggs from at the farmers market sells it to a woman who states unequivocally that it had stopped her menopausal hot flashes. When she doesn’t take it, they come back.
DE has been a staple for thirty years. I do put it in a glass of water, a heaping tablespoon. When I do DE my finger nails need to be trimmed more frequent, my bowels produce a nice smooth easy elimination. Here in missouri we have chiggers, I powder my legs from my feet to my knees and no longer have to worry about chiggers eating my crotch and wasteline, as I refuse to use spray on insecticide on my skin!
I apply DE and work it in to my dog’s and cats fur to kill off fleas & ticks, we NEVER use flea and tick collars..again due to the insecticide in those collars, I love my animals and refuse to harm them with those chemicals. WORM YOUR ANIMALS AND YOURSELVES WITH DE!!
We take 1tablespoon of DE and mix it into the dog food daily for parasite control. For cats use 1 teaspoon daily, If you dont want to do this daily then do this for two weeks and repeat every two weeks or so. I put it in my chicken’s water, my rabbits water for parasite control. I sprinkle the DE powder in the chicken coop and in their nest box’s to kill off the fleas and mites that effect chickens (and me when I’m in there). You got head lice?? Guess what.., how about bed bugs? I’ve not had the pleasure to deal with either of these in my adult years, but I’ve read DE rocks those to death…body crabs anybody??..same thing.
Got flea’s in your carpet from your outdoor cat’s or dog? Sprinkle DE on your carpet and leave it there for a couple weeks to get the hatching nits, then vaccum it up. I dust my rabbits fur with DE for mite control.
We sprinkle it in our food pantry to kill off those pesky kitchen moth’s that get into everything..we still have them, just they dont get into our food anymore.
It’s great stuff. Go to a local feed store and purchase it in 50# sacks, it’s around $45-$55 a bag. Just remember when using it for gardening, that it will also kill off the beneficial insects as well as the other’s. I’t will kill honey bees too! We use it sparingly in the garden, like around the cucumber and squash, etc. viney stuff where the vines meet the dirt. I wouldnt recommend a general broadcast on the garden because of the beneficial’s your going to kill.
Just a word to the wise: ONLY use FOOD GRADE/ CODEX FOOD GRADE DE for human usage. The DE that is used for pool filters has actually been heated to a high temperature and the diatoms are fused together, creating a much larger particle that will damage human tissue if ingested. I’ve read it can kill you if ingested. It does to the human gut what it does to the insects at that point.
So ONLY use FOOD GRADE DE.

Now that the author has exposed the great benefits of both colloidal silver and Diatomacious Earth… How about turning your readers on to Zeolite’s for detoxification from heavy metals. Zeolite’s are similar to DE in some of the detoxing as well. I’t just add’s to your arsenal of good cheap things you can use for health!
I’m thinking that it would be a great way of controlling the Ph. level in the body. I think that’s why it knocks out fungus too because it’s a base. We are supposed to be about 7.3 if you can achieve that cancer can’t survive that’s what an Italian doctor has written in his research. I have smelled a tumor that was cut out and it smelled like Athletes foot fungus. So I tend to believe what this doctor has said about it. The problem has been finding a way to manipulate the Ph. factor this looks promising.
I have been using diatomaceous earth for over a year now with no bad side effects. The only side effects I’ve noticed, is healthier hair, skin and nails. Much less heartburn or stomach problems and a happier disposition.
I did use DE in my 22 — 100ft rows for 2 years, worked great helping control bugs in everything planted I stopped because I found the kind I was using was not for internal human body, with a little wind I was breathing some when putting it out, so for I have found 3 kinds of DE but only one of those is good for me. So stopped using it and now use my silver on me and my plants, no not tuning purple using 500 ppm am using 10 ppm 1 teaspoon in morning just like grandma give me back in early 1950s
