Government Shutdown Continues over Border Wall Dispute
I hope you never played chicken as a teenage driver. The fact that you’re reading this today tells me you probably didn’t.
Chicken is a “game” in which two drivers speed toward each other. The one who turns away first loses and is called a chicken.
If neither turns away, one or both drivers may end up in a hospital or a morgue. Not exactly a game worth playing, is it?
There’s a game of chicken going on in Washington, D.C. right now. Neither President Donald Trump and his supporters nor the Democrats are turning away as they speed toward this collision.
Should Congress Fund the Wall?
Now, an invisible wall between Republicans and Democrats in Congress is nothing new. It’s been standing between them for many years.
But this may be the first time the government has actually experienced a partial shutdown over a physical wall.
Trump and many Republicans want funding for a wall on the Mexican-U.S. border. That’s to help curb illegal immigration.
Many Democrats and some Republicans don’t believe that the funds would be put to good use. They’d prefer other forms of security.
800,000 Federal Employees Affected
Both sides have dug in their heels and say they won’t relent. But both sides are also feeling heat from their constituents to get this thing resolved. And get government employees back to work.
In a moment, I’m going to ask what you think about this whole situation. I hope you’ll take time to respond.
In the meantime, let me give you a little background. Since December 22, about 800,000 federal employees have been furloughed. Or are working without compensation, because of the shutdown.
In addition, legislation that passed the Senate prior to the shutdown are on hold until the House can officially reconvene.
Social Security Checks Still Coming, But Food Assistance?
It’s called a “partial” shutdown because some core government functions are still running. For example, mail delivery continues, including Social Security checks. And military and law enforcement operations are still up and running.
But nine government departments have been affected. Including Homeland Security, the Justice Department and the Treasury. Also shut down are NASA and the Environmental Protection Agency.
Many national parks and museums are closed for now. Others are partially open because state officials are providing manpower. A vast majority of IRS employees have been sent home.
Food assistance programs will continue for now. But CNN reports that the nearly 38.6 million Americans dependent on food stamps could see reductions if the shutdown continues into February.
The USDA says the food stamp program is funded through January. But it has only $3 billion in reserves to cover February. That’s less than two-thirds of what is currently being funded.
Shumer Says Trump Is Wrong
The Democrats just took a majority in the House of Representatives. Just before then, Trump met with their lawmakers including Nancy Pelosi.
He insisted that Congress allocate $5.6 billion for a border security wall. This is one of Trump’s key campaign promises. As expected, the Dems said “no.”
Senate minority leader Chuck Shumer said he talked to Trump. He asked the president to give him one good reason why he should continue the shutdown.
“He could not give a good answer,” Shumer said.
Trump Says Dems Are Wrong
Trump’s response is that he is insisting on funding for the wall. He said he will hold out “as long as it takes.” And that it “could be a long time” before the government reopens.
“This is national security we’re talking about,” Trump said. “It’s too important a subject to walk away from.”
Sarah Sanders is the White House spokesperson. She accused the Democrats of refusing to compromise on the issue.
“President Trump made a serious, good faith offer to Democrats to open the government, address the crisis at our border and protect all Americans.”
Dems’ Plan Called ‘Non-Starter’
The Democrats have presented a plan to fund most government agencies through September 30, 2019.
But the proposal would not support the Department of Homeland Security, which is responsible for overseeing border security. That agency would only have funding through February 8.
Sanders called that idea a “non-starter.” She said it “does not fund our homeland security or keep American families safe from human trafficking, drugs and crime.”
Not every Republican is on board with what Trump wants. Utah Senator Mitt Romney recently blasted the president for “anti-immigrant” statements.

Yes, I believe we should build the wall. it won’t keep all out but slows down so border patrol can catch them. We should pay for it and add unemployed Americans to build it, be trained as patrollers to add to defense. Democrats are continuing to do wwhatever they can to get in President Trump’s way. They use misdirection and out right lies to stir up and confuse less intellectual persons for their benefit. you think that they care about these people they manipulate? They wouldn’t be caught dead in their presence except during election years. Get them to tell you how many of them DON’T have walls, cameras, and security at their homes. I would bet not a one of them, and it’s not just because they have a public life. They’re just as scared off murderers, crazed druggies, and other dangerous and harmful people that the average jack & Jill are afraid of, if they are honest.
Our borders should be protected, but per the adviso of the border patrol agencies; holding the government hostage is a childish and harmful tactic of a “throw-you-off-the-cliff player. This is NOT the correct tactic of someone who is trying to run a business. This sounds like a pouting and mentally ill person who forgot he is trying to run a business. Pouting.
I’m all for increased border security. Just not a wall. Most of the drugs come through legal entry points. We need to increase those area’s ability to detect drugs. The wall is not an answer. It is a useless statement that is going to cost us, the tax payers billions.
I’m all for legal immigration. I heard a statistic (and I say heard, because I haven’t researched this) that something like 40% of illegal immigrants fly to Canada and cross the border there. Which makes sense as New York seems to have a large amount of undocumented/illegal immigrants.
If you are worried about the migrant caravans. They live in a dangerous environment and are trying to escape terrible lives. They are attempting to come here legally by seeking asylum. As humans, we should look out for one another. We claim to be the best nation in the world, yet so many people seem to tremble in either fear or rage whenever someone from another country seeks help and a better life. I agree that we have to be careful on who we let into the country. We can’t let violent criminals or people who are/were involved with gangs or cartels.
As for human trafficking. That happens here as well. You don’t have to bring them up from south of the border. Criminals take in troubled teens, get them hooked on drugs, and prostitute them on the street corners. We need to focus on breaking up the human trafficking rings here in the states.
I can tell you don’t live down here. And no they don’t all come through points of entry bub. Many is the time myself and others have made our likely hood taking out the mules and “confiscating” their goods and I can guarantee it was not even close to any Port of entry. As to the caravans, when they are made up of mostly able bodied men of fighting age I’d be more inclined to call them terrorists or cowards.

1. become citizens and learn ENGLISH.
2. fly OUR flag and pledge allegiance to it.
3. conform to OUR nation’s ways and not instill theirs on us.
4. get a job and pay taxes.
I DO NOT support entry to our country by ILLEGAL methods nor support those ALREADY HERE ILLEGALLY. That goes for those from many countries whose visas have expired and are now “at large” in our country.

It looks like 99% of the people responding on this survey favor building the wall. I do not favor a wall. I do not buy any of the lame so-called rational that Trump exposes. He can repeat them 1000 times a days, the facts do not bear them out. Repeating a lie 1000 times will not cause it to morph into the truth.

Countless independent studies as well as the current administration’s own Studies have proven to us that there is no influx of people coming in through our Southern borders. It’s not a thing.
There has been a steady decline of people coming through our Southern border for more than a decade.
Having immigrants in this country does not bring us more crime or fiscal destabilization. Its not true. It’s not a debate. You can have a difference of opinion as long as we all agree on the facts. If you have an opinion that is not grounded in facts it’s not an opinion it’s a delusion.

I think the wall is need to keep them from coming in illegally. Force them to come in the right way. We could take all the money we are using to feed them house them and medical and build the wall. Having been in the military before 9/11, I saw the world changing to a different kind of warfare tactic well before everyone started talking about it in the news. After 9/11 people woke up seeing a tactic that was way different than anything ever seen before in the history of the United States. There are people in this world that do not like our way of life and will go through any means possible to affect the way we enjoy our freedoms. If you don’t believe me go live in the Middle East or Africa for 6 months to a year and you will believe me then. The border wall or fence or whatever you want to call it to make yourself feel good is fundamental to the overall security of the United States. All the people that are now talking against it all supported it 5, 10 or more years ago but now that someone is in office that is willing to stand by his word, they would rather use him as a distraction and go against anything he proposes. Propose a comprehensive immigration bill that will make the vetting process for the good people trying to enter this great nation more streamlined and vote for the funding for the wall now. Do what is right for the citizens of this country now and stop trying to appease to the future voting base of immigrants. This wall is not about keeping immigrants out, this wall is about keeping bad people and bad things like drugs and illegal gun/weapons from entering this country illegal and that is it!
Border Security is and always has been important. However, in the 21st century we have at our disposal many better and cheaper ways to secure the border as opposed to an “old school” wall. What many Americans don’t realize is that the wall will not follow right along the border but in many places be several miles inland from the edge due to many factors, such as rugged terrain, no utilities or roads, etc. That will impact the availability of the land to many ranchers and other agrarians. Using America’s edge in electronic surveillance to place a virtual wall along the border will cost less and offer a more difficult to defeat entity. I think both sides could agree on the idea of a well constructed and connected electronic wall that would be “more secure”. Several times a year we read about tunnels going under existing walls, an electronic one would be much more difficult to bypass and allow landowners full use of their lands. Let us move our border security into the 21st century.
Perhaps my math is a little different then Democratic Socialist math, but 200B a year to combat illegal immigration vs 6B for the wall, It seem like a no brainer to me. It almost as if the Dems want to destroy this country. Perhaps they’re the ones on the Russian payroll.

Yes they should fund the wall, It’s such a small % of the budget to cause all this havoc, and I would like to know how much this shut down is costing, especially when you factor in that all these furloughed employee’s will receive back pay, and are sitting home doing nothing, and there is work to be done.
When the President said that Mexico would pay for the wall, I never expected a check. Nor did I expect one when he said the wall would pay for itself, not expecting a ATM every 5 miles. It’s common sense, which seems to be lacking in politics, Of coarse a wall works, Not a 10 footer, easy to get over, but 20 + takes a little bit more of a ladder, anyone who works in construction can tell you those ladders are not cheap, then you have the 20 + fall on the other side, what can a drone do without a missile strike, on 100s of people rushing the border, And to tunnel under it takes time, and is detectable and correctable.

It is realatively such an minor amount of money. I am retired and living on a fixed income, yet I buy healthy food knowing that what seems like a large expensive now might keep me healthy and save unknown costs and losses in the future. A wall is such a prevention. We already have an idea of the expenses it will save us. It is foolish not to spend the 5.6 billion now before the crisis gets so out of hand with caravans flooding our borders that nothing can be done but try to manage to invasion. That would be stupid. President Trump is not stupid. He is a good leader and we would be wise to follow him in this. We are getting what we voted for.

I believe that a wall is one of the important tools to gain control of immigrants, among other tools. However, I believe that we need for the congress to get over their power struggle and make sound decisions for the sake of our nation. Maybe we need to start a private fund where we can contribute to build the wall, etc. build it!
The reason everyone wants to come here is because of the freedom we have because of our Constitution and capitalism that makes us so wealthy by creating goods and services to help others. The way to help would ideally be to spread that but since that’s not realistic we need to protect ourselves and keep out the criminals, drug dealers, and those who want the freebies instead of contribute to society. So many of us are hurt by these criminals who are just here to rob and plunder even murder. If we need a wall so be it, but at the same time maybe we should make it so it doesn’t take so many years and thousands of dollars for good people to come here LEGALLY.

Every politician running in AZ has promised a wall for the past 30 years, especially John McCain. The Border Patrols are always shorthanded to do their jobs and some have been killed. When the wall is built, the patrol can focus on finding and closing the tunnels. Ranchers in that area have been plagued with crimes for years. One of the reasons to stop the flow of illegal immigrants is to keep them from dying in the desert. Some ranchers put out containers of water just to keep people from dehydrating as they try to cross the desert. People from other countries pay ‘coyotes’ to get them across the border and those criminals take the money and drop them off in the desert, sometimes with water, sometimes not. A wall would stop the coyotes because the hope of crossing the border illegally would be taken away. We see pictures of families being separated, which has happened with a number of Presidents, but some family members don’t claim their children with the hope that they will be allowed into the US. It’s just now that the media is trying to blame President Trump for that so we see these images. A picture of a young girl crying while standing next to a border agent was shown in the news, but the agent tried to tell his side that the mother was standing next to him and the child stopped crying soon after the picture was taken, but that is what the media is trying to do to get people angry at Trump.
I feel the wall should be built and our borders should be protected. There are so many illegal immigrants using our resources and taking food out of the months of American people! I would cut all good stamps off to immigrants and illegals and sent them home with an order to not return because they came illegally in the first place. I think the ones that are willing to follow the rules and come in legally should be able to stay and build a life and a future. If you take away the right to re enter if they come illegally, it may detour other immigrants from being dishonest. They need background checks and immunizations and a contract to be productive as well as law abiding to come or be sent away. As Americans we have civil rights taken when we become felons so it seems a little crazy not to expect the same from immigrants. I think the government officials that have so much money and do without nothing should not get wages during the shut down and maybe they will come to a decision quicker. I think immigrants should have drug tests and a probationary period to report their activities here to reveal their purpose in coming instead of taking their word for it. As far as the people on ssi and ssdi, I believe their rent and utilities should be wavered during the period of non payment of benefits and there should be resources for them to eat. The American people simply should not have to suffer because of the deceptive illegals and our government not being able to agree to shut them down. Wee build the wall and we minimize the drug problem here and make it easier for law enforcement to bust dope cooks and rid our streets of a percentage of users. It’s time we take care of our own people and leave helping others in the hands of missionaries.
I have complaining about the problems at the border for years. We finally have a President that is doing something about it. We have let all these drugs and all the rest of the problems go on for years, I never could understand why. It seems to me that our representatives have been more concerned about the people from other countries than it’s own citizens. Americans have been very charitable to other countries. I am very much in favor of border security. I have listened to those people (the border patrol) who are trying to secure our border with little help from our elected officials (congress). I am glad to see that someone (the President) has the courage to stand up for what is right.

Yes, we need a wall! the boarder has been in dispute for years! this dispute has been going on since the Alamo. we need a boarder wall to keep out intruders and people who enter without going through proper procedure. Speaking of which, the congress needs to address the immigration laws too. these are must haves for our nation now! time for congress to stop fighting each other and fight for our country. Stop bickering, and work for our common good.

Walls/barriers around prisons, the Vatican, Isreal, celebrity homes, politician homes, etc. deter/work.
However, you build a 10-foot wall and the 11-foot ladder industry booms in Mexico. Once an illegal clears the fence/barbed wire strand and gets into the bush, they’re gone!
What we need is “defense in depth”. You build the first barrier,…a wall. Then build another barrier inside that, (barbed wire). Then a fence, the third barrier. The “No man’s land” needs to be electronically monitored should anyone get that far. That much trouble and pain would be effective deterrents. See how fast entries by illegals/drug traffickers/human traffickers drop.

I’ve been in San Diego since ’72, through the 70s seen alot of changes along the border. Through the 70s it was a 3 strand barbwire fence. Talked with Border Patrol they said for every 1000 caught 9000 got through. In the 80s the fence was replaced with marshal-matting, they still came through, bought a house in ’88, 1 mile north of the border 3 1/2 miles east of the ocean there is a cemented open drain ditch across the street, from 7pm to 6am you could count groups 20 to 30 heads running down that ditch like a freeway. In the 90s better fences were built in some places doubled rowed even tripled has cut migrant traffic down to 99.9% around my house. I not only say BUILD THE WALL but they can put all the wall protesters and bleeding hearts on a plane and send them to that migrants country and let them protest that government.
P.S. the dems don’t have a clue about the border and that also includes the ones from Ca.

Yes, Absolutely, Fund the WALL and any other security measures needed to protect of United States CITIZENS. Pelosi and Schumer should be put in Mexico with the ILLEGAL immigrants and then say this is manufactured. The manufacturing on this issue is the fact OUR Government has not taken care of this issue in over 35 years. TERM LIMITS are needed. We have to many politicians that do absolutely nothing for the citizens of this country. We can get the funds from the the billions of dollars we give to other countries in foreign aid which is only being used by these governments leaders and not on their people. Lets also look at the billions we spend one these ILLEGALS every year for housing, food medical, etc in our county and our CITIZENS don’t even get this help. We will no longer have a country if this crap continues.
I stand resolutely with President Trump’s on this issue. If he declared a national emergency and directs the US Corps of Engineers to do the job, good! On the same day he should reopen the govt., And provide the usual back pay, etc. He has legal authority, from our Constitution as well as from relatively recent law to do this. Americans will be safer, and Patriots will support him.

Does it bother anyone else that the 800,000 furloughed Federal workers is only a quarter of the Federal workforce, excluding the military? You’re correct. Trump allowed funding to avoid government shutdowns, giving the congress and senate a chance to agree on a budget that included funds for the wall. Each time, they did nothing! The democrats have been so upset about Trump winning the presidential election that they refuse to do anything that he suggests. I really don’t like to get involved with political issues but since Trump has taken office, there has been nothing but chaos and criticism. When my parents emigrated to the United States in 1956, one of the legal requirements of becoming a legal immigrant was a clean bill of health. If you were ill you had to come back six weeks later to prove you were a healthy human being You we’re not granted entry unless you were well. How many sick and worse, contagious illegal people are entering the United States, infecting our children in our schools etc. What about the exposure to swine flu or ebola? Now days they won’t learn English to become a citizen because they have a child born in US. They should not be able to collect food stamps, free medical and housing. Next thought, is there any one in gov to tell about Fort Knox, my thoughts no gold left, but where was it spent? I live in Arizona, we see illegals coming across the desert all the time. In 2014,15 and 16 so many of our business closed down do to over population of illegal and homeless. Physical walls sound great on paper, but you still have to patrol them and maintain them which is expensive. I would prefer a mix of physical barriers, towers and electronic surveillance – whatever the experts think makes the most sense. If Homeland Security wants a wall and can justify it’s cost/benefit versus other ideas then I’m all for it. But I wouldn’t fund it just because a politician made it his rallying cry. Politicans say whatever they need to get elected. That does not make it good public policy. I trust the people who’s job it is to enforce the nation’s borders that they know what is best. So ask them what they think is best and seek the funding for it in Congress. Congress has the right to govern just as much as the Executive branch. They must choose to choose to work together. I think there are better ways to keep our country safe. I think asking the people who actually work the job how they could best be helped for starters. Should be the first thing done. Then act on it. Then work on the relationships with our boarder countries so we get help from them as well.

The technology has been developed in the past 10 to 15 years that makes the Trump style wall obsolete. At the same time no one is saying that improved and new additional modern barriers may be needed in specific locations. Both sides agree on all other funding points that Trump wants at this time. Trump still has around $1.4 billion left to spend from the last budget agreement. Something to keep in mind, this is just a drop in the bucket of what the overall project will cost. Contrary to what Trump says, several analyst groups have estimated the cost from $22B to $35B and 10 to 15 years to accomplish. Not to mention the republican land owners that have already said they will sue to fight for their property. These land disputes could be tied up in the courts for years. Eminent domain is not a cut and dried process and the land owners will have a stronger case than the government. At this point all the land that meets the requirements has border fence or is already under eminent domain. The government has to meet requirements to justify their position. These land battles have already been decided against the government over and over again. Trumps wall will not happen!
We do not need a wall, we need to finally address the illegal immigrants who are already here and give them a path to citizenship. We need to give the dreamers citizenship. We cannot let the President (regardless of who he is) shut down our government because he didn’t get his way. The Senate and congress unanimously passed a bill before Christmas giving 1.3 billion for wall upgrades , which Mr Trump rejected. Our government is not supposed to be run like this. Plans are made and approved and then work is done. The President is holding the whole country hostage!

The wall needs to be built. I am a Crime Prevention Officer and have spoken to many border patrol agents who all say a wall will help immensely. These are the experts not the politicians. Just look around your own community at all of the walls and fences. They are used to keep people safe. They work! This is why Schumer, Pelosi and Clinton all spoke in favor of a wall years ago.

Some of you may not be old enough to remember in 1985, during the Reagan Administration illegal immigrant was addressed. The Simpson-Missoli Act, were 3.7 million immigrants received amnesty, with promise that congress would build barriers & fencing at the border. Schumer, Hoyer, Durban all agreed, then back out & never keep promise. They have been here before & Trump knows that if he agrees with anything they say, there is nothing to say that they won’t do the same. There are areas along the border that are wide open with a string of barwire marking the line, I suggest that before you are going to make the decision that we don’t need a barrier or fence you first need to go see the border for yourself. Funny Clinton, Bush, Obama, Pelosi, even Schumer have stated in the past that yes we need a fence. We pay taxes so HHS can spend $1200.00 a month to care for each unaccompanied children. That’s over 2 billion a year & going up each year. So go with the Dems & see what happens when they ask you to pay more taxes, but may also ask you to open your home to immigrants to live. Oh my gosh. Where does a person start on this subject that we shouldn’t even be having in the first place. A “wall” should have been built in the 70’s when the Mexicans who came to work in the fields refused to leave. The saw the “promised land” and told their family and friends and….well, we know the rest of the story. So the “bleeding hearts,” church officials, agri-farmers, a certain political party and construction firms saw how to double and even triple their profits and influence and “hid” the illegals in plain sight. So first we had the hard workers come here legally, then the illegals, then the dregs which we have entering now. So, we have to build a wall or face the consequences of what will follow the dregs. These are like the kids of the hippies of the ’60’s who just want to live at home, do drugs and never, ever work. So draconian means will have to be explored. I suppose that is why anything or anybody that is worth protecting/keeping safe currently has a wall around it! Look around! Democrats and Republicans agree on this! The wall is just the first line of defense, like having a fence around your house and/or keeping your front door locked. These steps are to keep roughly the first 50-75% from finding it EASY to just walk right in! Then, spend money developing a more comprehensive system of order security for the more hardened law breakers. This is NOT rocket science. BTW… It’s not hate that motivates me. It’s lawlessness and abuse of Americans kindheartedness. I never cease to be amazed at how quickly the left/Democrats judge people with this point of view when you don’t even know them personally! I have spent some time reading the responses to this question and have come to the conclusion that there are a certain group of individuals who have not read an unbiased version of history as well as haven’t read the foundation documents of this nation. The remaining folks working there are writers who write those things the talking heads will yak about. Whatever those few people write are what you and untold millions are talking about. Back in the 80s I told my wife by 2020 white Americans will be the minority’s we are very close to that point. By all means build a wall if you want. But a wall will do little to stem the tide. Most drugs enter through the various port of entries. Only marijuana is taken across outside of them. Criminals build tunnels under existing walls to ship in cocaine. Most asylum seekers go to port of entries as well, though by law it is not required. The reason we see people breaking through the fences is the backlog at the port of entries is high. Instead hire more immigration judges and border patrol to handle the increase. Terrorists or those coming from countries supporting or harboring terrorists usually come by aircraft. There were 6 people who fit that bill last year who came across our southern border. 41 came from Canada, which has liberal immigration policies. They say 17,000 criminals were apprehended, but of that number how many were arrested and deported only to return and how many had major convictions? I would rather “waste” the money needed for a 2000 mile wall on homeless veterans and infrastructure.

Border Security improvements are needed, however: While some amount of new “fencing” (or upgrades to existing fences) in certain areas may well be needed, the idea of a continuous wall the entire length of the southern border is both impractical and unrealistic. There already exist technologies that when adequately deployed can provide effective warnings of attempted border crossings. Congress (both houses, both Dems and Repubs) needs to be brave and force an end to the Government Shutdown ASAP, then all sides work together for a reasonable approach to this dilemma. What saddens me in reading some of the reader comments is the inherent bigotry and racism behind their suggestions. America is a Nation of immigrants since the country’s founding, of many creeds and skin colors. As a veteran (of the cold war era), I too would prefer to see much of that money allocated to help homeless veterans not to mention the overdue task of fixing nationwide crumbling infrastructure.

This is, as usual, Trump, the school year bully, having a tantrum, which is what he does whenever someone tells him “No”. This is not about security. He and his minions are lying about all of the threats. If you are watching any news group, including FOX, you know the truth. Drugs and terrorists are not coming over our southern border. And for every capital crime committed by an alien there are at least ten American born mass murderers.
Where I live, about 30 miles from the Canadian border, the only illegals we have are American or Canadian drug smugglers. Our unemployment rate is way higher than the national average and yet tradesmen, craftsmen, plumers, electricians, mason’s, etc. can’t find anyone willing to work and/or be trained with them. So don’t talk to me about who my tax dollars are supporting. Mexicans who who worked for me or for my family in Urban areas were far more hard working and loyal than the native born dregs of society on the dole.

The list of agencies affected are also the agencies with the highest level of partisanship and corruption. When those sealed indictments we’ve been hearing about get served, we might find the DOJ, HLS, NASA etc gutted… a continued shut down allows time to rebuild with good people.

Yes, the wall should be funded. The ones whose pay should be withheld is the entire Senate and Congressional members. They were voted in to represent the people instead they take care of their interests and help build up and support other countries. A budget should be passed on time and when it is not, every congressional and senate members should be fined $500 a day until passed and all bills should be clean, not hidden attached bills. When I was a government employee and went through several furloughs, opportunities were offered to help the employees that were having financial difficulties until they actually received their paychecks. We are losing our country if the illegal immigration and birthright situation is not resolved.

As a retired immigration paralegal, I can tell you there is no justification for a wall at the southern border. More undocumented immigrants get through the NORTHERN border than the southern by far. Isn’t it interesting that the President never discussed building a wall to separate us from Canada, lol. Next point – illegal immigration has been WAY DOWN – not up – by tens of thousands over the past 10 years. This is clearly a cynical political ploy by a President who could be spending his time and energy so much more productively. Next: Of the $1.2 billion ALREADY allocated for that wall, ALMOST NONE of it has been spent. The President’s claim that work on the wall has begun is false. I don’t agree with Democrats about everything – but in this case, they are 100% correct. Furthermore, I heard the President say he was “proud” to shut down the government if he didn’t get his $5.6 billion, and would take full responsibility – despite now blaming the Democrats. There was legislation proposed to end the shut-down and continue negotiations about a wall – more to the point there should be negotiations about border security, which is NOT this wall. I am a Federal employee going without pay and see no end in sight. I agree with border security as my work deals with the issue at hand. I am low on the totem poll of pay and live in a high cost of living area. I don’t have a savings or food storage like I would like to have. I have put in about 30 job applications as I see this going for awhile. I am getting ready to be called to work so we can process tax refunds without pay.

Being the wife of a furloughed employe, I am naturally worried about how long this shutdown will last. We are prepared for a while but if it takes a long time, we will deplete all our emergency supplies. I have supported the President until this. Why are the employee being punished for having a federal job.

I think that whatever Trump wants to do, we should do! And when he’s finished we should pass a law that NO POLITICIAN may run for any political office!! The border wall is not the way to solve the immigration problem: it is too easy to get around, under or over. Border security can be tightened with improved cyber surveillance and looking for ways to help the countries that are producing the refugees. Congress can justify spending money for improved security but not the wall.
Shutting down the government is a cheap way for Trump to get his point across; it hurts the wrong people and will eventually degrade the whole security of the US. The shutdown will create refugees within the US if people no longer have the funds for food and lodging.
It’s not too easy to get around if it is built properly! America needs a wall just like the O’Bummers, the killer Clintons and the hag Pelosi, the worn out alien Maxine Waters and many other rich people have around their homes. Why? More security!

Yes, Congress should definitely fund “The Wall”, because our borders [especially the Southern one at this time] should be as tight as it could possibly be. That being said, a simple, physical wall [either concrete or steel] is, because of human ingenuity, easily overcome. Ask the Chinese. Their wall didn’t work out really well for them & that was way long before man had such things as aircraft. Technology will work better than concrete or steel, but even that won’t be perfect. A simple boat trip up to Canada & a walk through the Northern border isn’t much of a stretch for drug cartels loaded with cash.
