Are you home schooling? Better watch out.
What does the government dislike the most about home schooling? Well, home schooling is not conducive to the photo opps that the government loves, such as children beaming with big smiles when a new public education program is launched or a government official visits a school.
But the biggest problem the government has with home schooling is the lack of control. Home-schooled kids can’t be indoctrinated into the government’s agenda the way public school kids can. They’re taught in the manner that their parents see fit, rather than in the way that teachers have been trained to do.
The last thing the government wants is a group of kids – even a group as small as the one that makes up U.S. home schoolers – growing up with beliefs that the government doesn’t share on a wide variety of issues, possibly including controversial topics such as abortion, same-sex marriage, immigration, gun control and many others.
I found out recently that Connecticut is trying to pass a bill that would require home-schooled kids ages 12, 14 and 17, as well as public school children in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 to undergo behavioral health assessments. You can read about it here.
Let’s see a show of hands from everyone who actually believes that the results of these “confidential” behavioral health assessments would actually be kept confidential, especially the ones conducted on home school kids. Why would the government spend its time and money on child assessments, if not to learn what’s going on in that child’s home?
What if the person conducting the assessment is biased against home schooling and/or does not share the same religious or social beliefs of the parents? What if the assessor determines that a child is “at risk” because he or she does not share the assessor’s political viewpoints?
An official of the Home School Legal Defense Association sums it up well when he says, “This assessment would constitute an unwarranted, gross invasion of family privacy. This bill should be opposed.”
If this bill were to pass in Connecticut – or even if it doesn’t – similar bills are sure to crop up in other states, including yours. Do you think this bill is really designed to protect children from unhealthy home environments, or is its goal to pull children away from parents whose views differ from those of the government? I’d really like to hear your thoughts about it.

Gov wants a new world order.
Hillary wants this. We are seeing results of liberals teaching our children for several years.
Liberals want money and control of our lives. This is one reason our gov. Does almost nothing to stop illegals and drugs to flow into our country. Get as many kids on drugs as possible. People on drugs can be easy to control. Take there guns (make laws sound like it protects us) away and we can’t protect ourselves. Teach these lies in public school and they will vote that way when adult.
Our country is split 50 50
Come November doesn’t matter how you feel. Hillary or Trump will be president. I think Trump will be best choice.
May Almighty God have mercy on our children
It’s all about nosing into what you’re teaching. They want to get DCFS/CPS into your life. It’s an invasion not only into privacy, but also free speech. The powers that be are dead scared of another group like John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry and George Washington. Gotta prevent it by any means.
The link is “Last Resistance.” The article was posted Feb 9, 2013. That’s over 3 years ago. Is the bill still active? Was it passed?
Great question. Anyone???
The following website says that this bill died in committee. http://www.hslda.org/cms/?q=bill/senate-bill-374-requires-homeschooled-children-ages-12-14-and-17-receive-behavioral-health. It is the State of Connecticut website.
What the schools want is money. For each child enrolled in their school they get x number of dollars from the U.S Department of Education. Then there are those that believe that only poor, or ‘backward’ parents are the families wanting to home school their children. So they think we parents who are, or did home school their children are stupid and they can’t get any money for your kids. Our first child graduated home school high school. We had a little ceremony for her and presented her with a nice certificate signed by her teacher-my wife, and me-the principal. She is at least as ‘social’ as any other people who were government-schooled. We had an association of sorts that got together with other home schooling families that went on all kinds of field trips together and she had many friends from her church as well. She scored a 33 on the ACT test and received a ‘full ride’ scholarship at our states’ second largest institution, plus a monthly stipend, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. Our other two kids started out home schooling and were scoring very high. I became disabled when one of them was 10 and the other was 16. Our divorce made it impossble to keep them at home as home-schooling is expensive and my now former wife had to go to work full time and I was unable to teach. Both kids got very bored in public school because the teachers had to teach in a way so that all of the kids at least had a chance to learn what our children had learned two years prior. Probably the worst thing we let happen as Americans was creating a national department of education. And, allowed them to unionize making it nearly impossible to fire sub-par teachers. Just look at New York. Paying teachers in many cases over $100,000 per year to report to a room where they sit all day because the schools are afraid to fire them because their districts big union is ready to strongly defend, in many cases, teachers who have assaulted students in various ways, or watch tv all day in their rooms, etc. They are hired to serve the people in their districts but sometimes it appears we are working for them. No government employee should allowed to join a union because they are hired to serve at our pleasure-not theirs. At least that’s my opinion, and my former wife agrees. She’s a hard working, dedicated teacher that gets results. Enough of my soap box, I’ll get down now! ””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””””’

I have been telling the world but it seems the world will no listen. We have to the 1960’s ! They were taking kids or I suppose anybody into college that had no business even being there ! How so many were able to graduate is not a mystery as they graduated with a deploma and also a card as a member to the Democratic Socialist Society. When one of my grandsons was attending middle school I read some curriculum that was pure Satanic and I went Balistic ! I could not believe what they were handing out ! We have never got those people out of the Department of Education ! Our now corrupt Government, if people will open their eyes and ears they will see and hear those that have Anti Christ motivation in their body. Everything that is presented as good, is turned down or destroyed ! And they are in all high places I Why do they continually praise Lincoln and noy George Washington ? He was our FIRST President. Why were Lincoln and Kennedy the only two Presidents asassinated. Find out what Bible they read and you will have the Answer ! Yes there is a LUCIUS bible or should I say Lucifer! ! ! !
It’s just another way for DHS to take kids away from parents. They are already stealing kids if the parents dare to question doctors, on medical treatment in some states.
Home schooling can be very good thing if the parent is able to do the schooling. So many are not able to do it as free thinkers because of the system of schools they were in. This public school system is not good for free thinkers. Only for learning what government wants one to learn, and be controlled by government thinking.
Gerald…….That is just it!! As a former public indoctrination worker I will say this public “schools” train yours and my children NOT to think for themselves and that is a terrifying thought. The federal government only wants human robots that are easy to control and that NEVER think for themselves. Public Schools started after the “civil” war when Herman Mann came over to the US at our President’s invitation to discuss his “theories” on educating groups of 15-35 children The President liked his suggestions so much that he sent Mr. Mann all across the nation to start schools. Herman Mann has been called “The Father of Public Education”.
We are raising our autistic granddaughter. She went to the public elementary school for kindergarten. I was very disturbed at some of the garbage that common core was teaching her . We visited several private Christian schools as alternatives- none of which felt they were able to accommodate a high functioning autistic child. So our only option is homeschooling. I homeschooled my 2 girls and they are both wonderful you women. It does scare me a bit when it comes to homeschooling someone as special as my granddaughter. I have to do everything right with her. What of o make mistakes? There’s just so much riding on this. I will not , however, allow her to attend a public school ever again! So I figure that I’ll pray a lot for guidance and know that at least she’s not a common core victim anymore.
Veronica……I am so sorry that you and your precious Grandaughter have to live thru that. Both my Girls went to public schools and I homeschooled my son this year and next he will be studying for his GED. It has been a struggle because of his ADHD and learning problems but……..we have made it thru and with God’s help we will make it thru and so will you and your Granddaughter too!
I find no reason for our goverment to be concerned about our childrens education when they don’t seem to be concerned about our integrity and moral of the teachers that are teaching our children . I think that a mother has more intrest in the good welfare of there children than the highly restricted teachers that can no longer punish or repremand an a unruly student that could be an influnce on our children
Dear Frank,
I actually got your article just after I read the article from HSLDA regarding Connecticut and their law attempt. Thank you for getting this out to people. It is so nice to know that you are on the same side as our family.
I do have to say though that I am sick by some of the comments that were made here on this particular article. I really wish that some people would keep their comments to themselves rather than publicly humiliate or verbally castrate people because they have nothing better to do than be rude or really have no clue what they are talking about.
We have homeschooled our children for 18 years. We have 5 children ranging in age from 22 down to 6 and will continue to homeschool them until they are done (at least eleven more years!) or until God sees fit for something else. My children have participated in cooperative learning (classes with others) nearly every year. They have been in 4-H, given speeches to public service groups, gone on field trips, had the freedom to go to lunch with the elderly and pursued the things that best interest them. Two have graduated. One is in college and pursuing a dream career. One works very hard to find the “American Dream”. We do not test until high school because it is unnecessary. We deal with learning disabilities on our own as much as possible and when that was not enough went to the school for some help. We have good relationships with others and do not deliberately hurt people. We look for resources in places others may not look and because they are not always free, we decided voting with our dollar was a better way to get better care.
All of this to say…those that do not really know what homeschooling entails should be careful before speaking. Opinions do not make facts and are usually misconstrued. Most people who home school do so because they value education and family. Spelling errors on a thought posted in haste does not mean that parent cannot spell or is unable to teach. Also, just because a child does not do school when you think they should or in the way you think they should, does not mean they are not doing anything. Maybe those parents school at night or they unschool which is very popular in some circles. Don’t be so quick to judge until you have all the facts. Falsely turning someone in to DFS can ruin a family for a lifetime.
Connecticut has real problems. They are trying to do these things because they do not want the parents to have control. They already have a very high rate of foster care needs and as they continue to build toward these ideas they will bankrupt everything in sight. This is a power play. I can say this because we have been trying to adopt for over a year now. We want to help but Connecticut will no longer allow anyone to adopt their children, if they are known to be religious or homeschooling. In the state, or out. This idea is spreading like wildfire. They already have so many laws on the books that the only people with any freedom at all are the criminals.
I beg any of you with even just half a brain to please fight for what our constitution should uphold. Take care of others. Help where you see help is needed. If we all went back to believing that people can be good instead of thinking everyone is evil; to doing the best we can for others; to a time when you didn’t have to be afraid of everything; then many of these laws wouldn’t even make it past their pencils onto paper.
If you hate America so much, then please don’t comment on Patriot sites. If you hate others so much, then stay home and wallow. My family will not sit down and worry about ourselves. We will fight for what we believe in…God, Country and the freedom to enjoy happiness.
God bless those of you who are fighting too!
I home schooled my children after I caught a teacher using physical pain to get my deaf daughter’s attention. I reported her and rather than take action against the teacher, the public school system circled their wagons and blackballed me. They can not legally do that but I figured if they are that rotten I do not wish to have my children in their system.
It, of course, was a saving grace. Both of my daughters grew to be emotionally and intellectually intact adults. That is to say they did not grow up in the perverted, corrupt system that is our public schools.
The schools main focus is domination and control. They care much less about education than they do about carefully weeding out and medicating any potential free thinkers.
From my observations the public school system has been hijacked by the group think morons that feel highly threatened by anyone that shows any signs of not towing their line. If they had their way we would still be without the wheel or fire, as they tend to brand innovative and independent thinking as a dangerous thing that must be controlled and hidden so that is can be used, not to benefit society as a whole but for their masters’ personal gain.
Frank we belong to HSDLA thank you for bringing this to your membership . I would suggest to anyone home schooling t0 join them.
Money well spent indeed.
I am a stay at home mother of two. I homeschool both of my children. They are 8 & (just turned) 6. I am a woman of faith. Biblical study is our first order of business to the day. Then, we move into the other aspects of education. Being that we live off one income we have to budget for curriculum. I have left which curriculum to get up to God. He has not failed us. I did a lot of research via online & through books that give wonderful insight. Anyone looking for some awesome curriculum let me know. I am willing to share where we found the materials we use. Children learn every moment of every day! Every moment, be it at home with parents or outside of the home, is an opportunity to teach. We as parents have an obligation, entrusted to us by God, to discipline (the word disciple refers to one who learns & discipline refers to teaching) our children. I believe, in my heart, that God put it upon my heart to teach my children at home; not just in the early years of learning but in their formal education as well. Statistics show that home schooled children score higher on tests. My 8 year old did kindergarten & part of first grade in public school; before I could convince my husband (who shared some of the same concerns about socialization) to let me teach. Like everything there are those who take advantage of a wonderful opportunity to truely build a family bond that only home schooling can bring. I noticed that a few had made comments about misspelled words. Obviously I don’t know the ages of those making comments in either direction; but public education is not what it was 50 even 25 years ago. Classrooms are crammed. Children are missed. Parents don’t care or are to busy trying to live as the world lives; that their most precious gifts are falling prey to unnecessary evils. I remember someone once told me, “if you don’t stand for something- then you’ll fall for anything.” We parents must stand for our children’s rights to live as this country was initially structured…..free! Most of my family opposed my home schooling. They too had become accustomed to what is acceptable in the world’s standards. Being a home schooling family is hard work, takes sacrifice, lots of LOVE & above all else a trust in the one true God. I applaud all who have taken this journey on & those who are starting out!! There are support groups for parents & social groups in every state. May God’s favor & light shine upon America once again!
If more children had parents like you with faith and moral upbringing, there wouldn’t be shootings at schools, or kids killing kids.
When parents abandoned God to live their self centered lives, they threw their kids to the wolves. Now we have a bunch of misguided kids trying to find their place in an ever changing and often “Faithless” world. When there is no hope or direction, someone is lost forever.
Conn. is a desperate place full of misguided people who have no trust in God. Their actions are predictable. If you have Trust in God, you don’t need any government telling you how to live your faith based lives…and your children will know the difference between making good choices and bad choices. God directs their hearts and minds as children and as adults.
KEEP ALL FORMS OF GOVERNMENT OUT OF OUR HOMES AND CHURCHES! They do NOT know what they are doing and it is an action driven by FEAR and IGNORANCE. They are the ones who need “Behavioral Testing” because their worlds are just as confused as many guideless children walking around.
If America wants a safer country, they need to go back to simpler times when families ate dinner together, worshipped together, communicated with each other, knew each other’s dreams. We have fragmented as a Nation and let undesirables make important decisions for us. No more…fight any legislation like this in any state. Our Families deserve only the BEST we can give them…a life guided by God and a Nation founded on Christian principles.
you said it right. we own our children, not the schools, or the goverment.
Ok, I have read all the comments posted thus far… I am a homeschooling mother of a 14 year old boy. I live in South Texas and find it hard to swallow that even one person could think it is ok to have “big brother” breathing down your neck as to the education of your child! This is an absolute outrage! As for the skeptics – please understand that while I do know a few homeschooled children who do not get a “great” education, most do. My son is a good example of this because he excels in most areas, but does have to have a little extra time in a select few. Being homeschooled allows the required time for my son to grasp those difficult areas with both hands until he has them firmly embedded. If he were in a public school, he would not have the extra help or time to do this because the teachers are not able to provide individual attention to the students or ability let them work at their own pace. As for not being “properly” socialized, we have had no issues with this. He is able to have a conversation with an adult as an equal participant and frequently does so in church bible study. He has public schooled friends that he “hangs out” with after school and on weekends. He plays football, basketball, baseball, etc. with the other boys at the park. He babysits my 3 1/2 year old grandson and 1 1/2 year old granddaughter on a regular basis. He has a good head on his shoulders, knows right from wrong, he’s able to be a proactive part of our small town community, and has good family values as well as good morals and manners. Oh – did I forget to mention that he was in a public school for K-1? Yup, I pulled him out because his 1st grade teacher insisted that he was ADD/ADHD and that he should be put on medication for it. The teacher even went as far as to have the Department of Family Services pay us a visit! He had no business diagnosing my child without a PhD! No, he is not ADD/ADHD, I did have him tested with his doctor (about 2 months before this all happened). This was the intrusion that broke the camels back, I simply could not deal with the public school system any longer. Public schools get extra federal funding for each “special or medicated” child they have on their rosters. I truly hope the state of Texas does not allow “big brother” to interfere any more than it already has. As for the people who said there should be tests given that are regulated by the state… go live elsewhere and leave the United States to us real Americans! I apologize if I’ve offended anyone, but it is the way I feel and believe.
I totally agree. It’s none of their business. It’s not about education, it’s about the money how much each school can get. I homeschool my 14yr and 4yr old but sadly my 14yr old wants to try high school so we will let him this next year. He has been to public school before k-5. He loves music so he will be playing in the school band. I pray that other homeschooling parents can start coming together to fight back against the governments intrusions.
I totally agree that the government does not want parents to school their own children. We need to stand up to this. I wrote a book called “The Adventures of Trapper Jake” This a excellent book for home schoolers!!! Lets keep fighting for our freedoms.>>John Carpenter
As a Gen Xer, public schooling is all I have known, with the exception of 5th and 6th grade, where i attended a catholic school, and the only thing i learned there was how to cuss and use profane language. Now??OMG!! You are out your freakin’ mind if I ever let any kids of mine attend public school
Let me get this straight. We have home school children taking a gun and killing other students? We have home school students raping and stealing and using foul language? I do wonder why the government does not require the same for Moslem schools that are in this country and teaching very non=American values.
As a matter of fact my daughter is currently in one of these “happiness projects” that is exactly what you describe. In public school in Hillsborough County Florida.
This President & his socialist goons have done so much to try to destroy everything about this country. This mad man hates this country. I can’t believe our congress is not trying to impeach this man. There is something going on, and it is fixing to hit us right in the face. There is some reason why the Reps. are not doing anything about all the problems, except grip & complain. This man said he was going to change America, and he has. He don’t care about education, and his health care is not meant to work anyway. We are going to have a government run system. Our Military is slowly being destroyed, to make us weak. Sooner than we all think ,the Dollar will be no more. Experts say buy gold, for what. How do U get change for a $250.00 gold piece, for a loaf of bread. This mad man has 2 years left, and he is going to make us pay any way he can. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!!
I am not a resident of Conn. but strongly oppose SB374 and am glad to see that you do the same!!!!! It’s a bad idea for America and the interest of it’s citizens. We must rise up and oppose these illegal acts of our elected Government officials and let them know that we are not going to take this illegal behavior lying down………..Stand up and resist with your voice and your pen!!!!!!!! Stand strong “Connicans”, you have a friend in Maryland!
Okay, that’s it. It’s time to LEAVE the United States. I left some time ago but you guys are nuts if you stay in that tyrannical fascist Hitler-loving country.
Interesting Comments About Home Schooling.I noticed with some dismay the spelling errors In our Comments.I Think If We AreTalking About Education Spelling Might Be Important!
This is despicable. They are on to something though. More than money, jobs, property homes, food or anything that you can name, our true wealth is in our children. If they are corrupted, then there is not much to live for nor is there any point in going “forth to multiply” as the Lord said. Why cooperate in procreation if the offspring are unGodly?
My sole satisfaction is not in what I have accomplished, but in the procreation of a child ordered to God, first and above all else. There is also satisfaction in the flip side, that is, in not providing canon fodder and hard hearted youngsters to become Americas “Hitler Youth”.
I am split on this issue. l admit that myself and both daughters attended public schools and all in all it was a good healthy, learning experience. There were sports, debates, public speaking, plays and others activitys to get involved in that home schooling does not intail. Children miss out on learning how to interact with other people. To be a team player, how to work together with others, how to contriute to a group, how to present a speech, how to debate a point and how to convince others with opposite opinions that there are other ways to look at a problem.
Homeschooling does take away the dangers in public schools. These dangers can be addressed, and certainly could be controled with better policys and enforcement of the rules that are in place. Some students and do make good lives for themselves being home schooled.
I do agree that the feds should stay out of the public school every day learning experience. I know that the school systems collect a huge funding for both the feds and state goverments.
To sum it up, parents need to be an active part of their kids learning plan,
The federal government needs to butt out of schooling. Schools should go back to being run by each state. And all government needs to butt out of home schooling. Child safety should be a separate issue entirely. And laws should be enacted that protect parents from the horrors of Child Protective Services (in case you are not aware of what’s going on with that, you can find a lot of information online)j.
Dave, I’m sorry but you are misinformed. Home-schooled children can and do participate in any and all of the activities that you mentioned.
I am a home-school graduate (after spending my first 5 grades in public school) and I still know some home-schooling families. Their children are a part of debate teams and the level of learning is so much higher. I know a six year old who can read at a 4th grade level. I once knew a 12 year old who was already taking a few courses at the local junior college. When I was in school, we were a part of a homeschool group – there were field trips, an art fair and science fair. I was forced to do some public speaking.
As for socialization, homeschooled children have an opportunity to interact with people from every age group. Public school children spend 6-8 hours everyday just amongst their own age group.
Whether a parent chooses to homeschool or put their children in public school is their own choice and Government needs to stay out of Parents’ decisions.
This is complete ignorance of homeschooling and leads to the pushing of laws that take freedoms away from all.
Dave, I must agree with Cathryn. We are currently homeschooling our 12 & 14 year-old children. There are so many good options open to us for “extracurricular” involvement that we have to say “no” to many, just so we can stay home a few evenings a week. Even so, our current schedule includes: homeschool co-op, music lessons, karate, speech, worship team @ church, AWANA, 4-H, and membership in the local mineral collectors club. As for “socialization”, I have been told by multiple public school teachers that our kids are extremely well adapted and have socialization skills far surpassing their public schooled counterparts. They converse politely and respectfully with senior citizens, and play with toddlers in the nursery at church with equal aplomb. Besides, who really wants to raise a socialist, anyway?
This is Common Core comming to the state level! Look hard at Common Core and its requirements in your school system. We need to get people more involved in the imposition of this goverment program and its reporting requirements.
We as parents need to convince the general public that home schooling can be done through parents who at least know how to spell (coming… Not comming). And yes, Common Core is evil to the core. If people would just stand up against this sort of thing as INDIVIDUALS and stop waiting around for someone else to fix things, we’d be a lot better off. If we REFUSE to go along and stop being afraid (they can’t put us ALL in jail, right?), then Americans could be free once again. The reason I left the US is because Americans are cowards and would not band together with me to stop this foolishness. Egyptians are much better at claiming the phrase ‘land of the free and home of the brave.” Brave indeed.
Linda,
It is amazing that you are so critical of someone writing a quick post. You sound just like a Liberal, hopefuly your not, oh by the way i dont care if something is not spelled correctly. You sit there and judge people by a simple spelling error, get a life……
Ken, rather than take offense at Linda’s grammar corrections, I suggest you take another view. Who taught the commenter that “coming” was spelled “comming”? You used the wrong “your”, it should have been “you’re”.
I don’t necessarily see that as a personal deficiency, but rather I see it as a failure of the public school system. It’s only degraded further as time has gone on.
And finally, as a parent it is my DUTY to make sure my children are educated not only in the ways I see fit, but also in the ways that will prepare them to repair this country. As a United States citizen, I should have the right to achieve that goal in the way that I see fit.
The federal government has no business being in the education business. With what is going on in WV lately, it is obvious that the state has no business interfering, either. All education should be controlled by parents, whether it is public, private or homeschooling. No one else should have the right to decide what a child does or does not learn. Indoctrination in public schools began the day mandatory education was enacted! It is nothing new at all. However, most of today’s parents and grandparents have no idea that they were being fed anti-American drivel as fact! With the cost of a college education these days, and the drivel being taught even at the college level, about the only chance most children have at getting a real education is homeschooling.
Hear! Hear!
I’ve been saying that the Department of Education should be abolished from the government. I’ll take my chances at home and the library.
I agree this is against our rights as parents. Of course they want them to have the same beliefs. It really scares them if we the people would rally up against them because the people do not realise what power they would have if they would all stand together and so let’s be praying that Gods will be done and that he provides to us the strength and guidance we need to to lead our children in the Lords ways!
Yes, Heather, you are right. God’s will be done… and I’m CERTAIN His will is NOT what is going on right now. What’s going on now is the DEVIL’S will.
This is an attempt to “diagnose” kids with a mental disorder listed in the DSM so they can be referred to a counselor then be prescibed meds…it’s all about mind control of the population and for big pharma kids are a huge demographic which means mega bucks…has nothing to do with a child’s welfare…..
I believe it is two-pronged… it is exactly what you have said… and it is the ever on-going attempt to brainwash the children.
This is a major issue, I do want knowledge of how some parents of interest are teaching the hate for America and her Citizens. Due to the distrust generated by their actions, or lack of. Discussions for the New Republic, requires immediate solution. Any suggestions? America, Bless God, again!
This may be true, but it’s also just your opinion. Bottom-line, its your friends responsibility to raise her children and thus it should be her choice as to how her children are to be educated… wrong or right.
The problem with public, federally mandated education, is that this type of education process tends to take from parents their responsibility to educate their own children. Which is just the opposite of what’s needed.
On the flip side, we have a troubling trend in this country where more and more parents refuse to shoulder their responsibility to educate their children properly. Education is more than just the three R’s. The truth is, children who have parents that are active participants in their education do well even in public schools. So you can’t just blame the Government.
The answer to providing our children with a proper education begins in the home. Thus our resources should be focused on helping parents understand and shoulder their stewardship to educate their children.
This much I know, from personal experience, federally mandated programs have only two interests; public face and private payroll. Rarely do they have the child’s best interest at heart.
I had a friend living with me that home schooled her 13 year old…during the seven months they were here he never did any school work. Here in Texas you don’t have to show proof that the child is doing the work or the mother was doing the tests for him online. She is setting him up for failure. And him only 13 and weighing 245lbs! She setting him up for failure…mentally, physically and emotionally….the poor kid has no friends at all. It’s sad really. toodles debs
As a home school mom, I can assure the home school mother you had contact with is the exception, not the rule. My daughter never went to public school, until she was 17 and attended a public college. She passed her college entrance exam without any studying and did well in college. She is now married and remains in contact with some of her friends she met attending home schooling events.
This is the fault of the State of Texas not requiring testing. Under the testing requirement, his mother/parent would be forced to make him study and to test. If he failed the tests, then he would be required to enter public school. That’s only fair.
No, it is not the “fault” of Texas. Texas has it right! My state recognizes the rights of its citizens and doesn’t trample on them. Homeschoolers are considered private schoolers in TX. The formal private schools are not subjected to gov’t mandated tests and neither are we HSers. We can only go on what the original poster says about “no school work ever being done”. Learning isn’t about sitting down in front of worksheets & regurgitating. Maybe this child’s parent was taking a different approach to learning/teaching? (I would like to point out that we know overweight public school children who seem to fit this child’s description. AND, I also want to say that assuming a child attending public school will succeed is ridiculous. There are more and more public school failures every single year! ) The beauty of HSing in TX is you can pick your curriculum and administer it how you wish. I am sure there were be plenty of judgment on how I HS my kids but they are above level of their public school peers in many disciplines. They know things their public school friends don’t because we teach them what we feel they need to learn to be successful in life……not just how to take a test. I am sure their public school friends know some things my kids don’t because they are exposed to different things and I am happy my kids don’t some of the things the public schoolers do.
Jan—Amen!!! Well put.
Hello!
I sent this to Frank Bates and he said to post my questions on the blog. I really couldn’t find an appropriate place, so m hoping, begging for someone to help my children and myself with this project.
I am the single mother of 4 children…Well still at home. There are 11 total. My children’s father was removed from the home over 4 years ago, under a domestic violence order.
Two of the children at home are disabled, autistic with many other problems. I bought your complete program. I want to do it as part of my children’s home schooling.
I am clueless on how to figure out what I need.
We have an outdoor wood boiler. This boiler heats our house and hot water. Eventually we hope to have a greenhouse and maybe even find a way to power a clothes dryer with it. The pumps are already installed for a dryer and greenhouse. The boiler is sized for all of the above. For now, the clothesline works great!
I would like to learn with my children, how to power the heat and hot water….Actually for now…One pump, the fan on the heat pump, and one motion sensored security light.
The boiler pumps are 115V/60Hz and we are only using one now.
The fan in the heat pump, that blows the hot air into the house is 208-230V, 1.3 amp, 1/5 HP, 60Hz.
Seems silly to heat with wood, and still need electricity to do it. I would do this completely off grid.
Thank you for any help you can offer. This is brand new territory for us. My experience with electricity is mostly plugging something into an outlet, although my children and I have done some simple wiring. Everything here is a learning experience.
Thanks to anyone that could offer some help.
I think it is just another way for the Govt. to butt into our lives
Here in Minnesota they have a program called homebound. They state that a parent cant give out a test without a teaching license. I have two children with big medical problems, they have had to be home instead of school due to surgeries. The Tudor comes to your home. Invasion of privacy as far as I’m concerned. Control. Great article. God help us all.
Do you mean Tutor? It amazes me how some of the parents who are so adamant about teaching their children at home don’t even know how to spell! And there is no excuse; all you have to do when you write something is look up the words in a dictionary. Is that so difficult? If you can’t spell, how do you expect your children to learn that skill from you? I believe the federal government has no business AT ALL in education. I think public education should be at the state level but when it comes to home schooling, parents should have TOTAL freedom to do home schooling… as long as there is state testing to assure that the child is indeed studying and learning at an appropriate level. With state testing, parents should have total freedom to home school their children.
My Dear Miss Linda,
Please, please, please stop criticizing people for their spelling errors in such a judgmental and mean spirited way. I will agree with you that proper spelling and grammar is important. I agree with you that children, as well as adults, should be taught proper spelling, grammar and form. I do not agree with your attacking assessment of others. I do agree with you that the federal government has no business getting into the education of individual children/families. I am on the fence regarding state testing; I understand it is required for students to advance and earn diplomas, as well as enter higher learning institutions. I believe the requirements for such testing should be established and monitored by an independent, child education focused group, in order to ensure appropriate guidelines and standards, and severely limit DHS involvement.
May God have mercy on our very challenged country.
Truly in Christ Jesus,
Miss Penny
Linda, I’m pretty sure that Kelli is not really doing the educating–the public school sends a tutor to do that.
We as a nation need to get back to the values that our forfathers designed and put in the constution .. judicial biblical principles..
home schooling is better for a child then public and privete. plus. the way people dress in these schools make it harder for them to do there studys, and the foul language thatis said and the bullying going on. there is no interuptions at home verse schools.
That, I believe is a very accurate assessment of the government education system. Too many are given high school diploma’s without ability to read, or know enough to be logical and recognize when two statements or assertions are contradictory and that contradictory statements cannot both be true! The do not know history of what results when power grabbers want to take control. Probably never heard most of what the founding folks knew as taken from the original writings, such as “a government that is big enough to give you all you want is also big enough to take everything you have.” And they do not understand that humans create wealth by inspiration and presperation. People are the resource for a prosperous society, and everyone should be helped, via education et al to be the best and most prosperous they can be. Because that helps everyone else. The opposition betrays that they do understand the real nature of fallen humanity when they think coercive control is needed.
