Unelected officials are out to destroy another industry
How would you like it if a group of unelected officials who had been given ridiculous amounts of power by a lying, cheating administration came after you and your business? Probably not too much, right?
Well, that’s how Joe Mitcham of Louisiana feels right now. His peach orchard business, which has been run by his family since 1946, is under attack from that wonderful group of folks known as the Environmental Protection Agency. “Protection,” my butt. We all know that their number one goal is to make life miserable for the people who don’t like President Obama’s politics.
Mitcham says that the EPA is going to make him close up the largest peach orchard in the state. In its infinite wisdom, the EPA has decided that the chemical used to treat diseased peach trees threatens the ozone layer. Most of Mitcham’s trees won’t survive without this chemical. Already, the ban has forced him to cut his staff from 60 to 20, which means 40 more people are out of work. Thanks, Barack.
Of course, Mitcham is not alone. Other peach orchard owners across the South are also affected by this ban. The Competitive Enterprise Institute says the ban is costing southern states up to $1.5 billion. The American Farm Bureau Federation is also chiming in, telling Congress that banning this chemical will hurt crop production in the U.S.
It shouldn’t be long until peaches are much more difficult to find. And when we do find them, they’ll be priced much higher. And all because of a government that sticks its nose where it doesn’t belong over and over again. I’d like to see every member of the EPA take a one-way trip to the ozone layer.

Methyl Bromide is the chemical used on the peaches. Peaches I have bought at the grocery stores never ripen. I don’t buy them, any longer. Methyl Bromide is very volatile and definitely a destroyer of the ozone layer. Our Ozone layer is important in preventing UVA and UVB from entering into the earth. When these rays enter the earth, this causes higher temperatures and also skin cancer. Any compounds containing Bromide need to be banned and anywhere.
Would it have killed you to tell us exactly what “this chemical” actually is?

I am old enough to remember when peaches were actually peachy. But I have not bought a peach in a market for 40 years at least, because “modern methods”, including chemicals, have made them INEDIBLE. Maybe dangerous as well.
I’ve had an orange tree for years… even when they get a bit of frost bite they still juice great. Now I’ve started a peach and pear tree along with a Japanese plum, fig tree and coaching the neighbors lemon tree to grow more over MY fence. Monsanto will not hesitate to poison US if it makes them more money. Our government has become 100percent bought and sold… that would be BS. and people like Killary only wants to carry on bamaboy (gay muslim married to a man-Mike) in destroying the US along with all his “appointed” musim friends… be it buying all the bullets so we don’t have access to them, shutting down coal mines, closing down peach farms with some BS excuse. I am for the phasing out of all chemicals that harm the air, land and sea. These chemiv=cals have brought us to global warming and we simply must find other ways to deal with the problems we have created. Studies (that have been hidden by the blobama admin) show that there has been NO increase in climate temp for more than 50 years. In fact they show just the opposite. Average global temp has decreased nearly .3 degrees since they startedkeeping track.

Why did all our food chain problems start with the FDA? No, not November. NOW! The problem is that people wait until November of a presidential election year, then complain that they have no real choice. Your real choice is now, in the primaries. Don’t like anybody in the presidential primaries? The time is NOW, for school board, and local, county, and state primaries. These are the people who in 10-15 years will be running for federal office. Become a party committeman (or woman). Most committee posts at the local level lack candidates, and so are filled by appointment by the county party chairman. If you do nothing but vote in November, you get what you deserve.
Well as far as I see it, BIG money rules and controls all Gov. parties. Monsanto and others like it own the Gov. and are near getting control of the world food supply. Now they are killing off the bees so there will be no natural seed left and they are close to doing just that. Guess what the only seed that you will be able to get, will be their self pollinating GMO shit. As many farmers will tell you, they have to sign a contract and can only sell their crop back to Monsanto. So what do you do, go out of business, or loose what has been in the family for generations. They win no matter what, by sending thugs around to intimidate you and your family. If that doesn’t work then you can almost be sure you will have a bad accident where you got killed. Remember don’t expect any help from any Gov. the world over as they are owned by BIG money. If you don’t believe me just look up how many farmers Monsanto has bankrupted with the Governments blessing. Until we have a Government that has the protection needed to put a stop to companies with no morals, you can expect to be paying most of your income just to put their GMO food on your table. I am not a big fan of the FDA, but the poison on the peaches makes it’s way into American children’s stomach’s. ORGANIC peach growers have no problem using natural products to stop this fungus without killing bees and people!
I agree Deborah Lawson. I am part of a Community Share Association and buy all of my veg organic and most of the fruit is organic as well. Peaches grew hundreds of years ago without this chemical, it can be done again. Unfortunately, the govt. doesn’t make it easy for the farmers because as previously stated, Monsanto doesn’t want organic to work. It is very unfortunate that these farmers have to go through this. They should slowly change over to organic before it is too late.
The chemical in question is methyl bromide, a fumigant that is highly toxic to humans and animals. This poor farmer has never known anything other than spraying fungicides to get rid of fungus. Organic growers know so much more than this unfortunate guy. There are many peach varieties that are far less susceptible to fungus than others. Also, the mineral content of the soil can affect the resilience of the tree to resist infestation. There are natural methods of dealing with fungus. We had two peach trees in my yard when I was growing up and never had fungus. Growers have had ten years to learn about these methods and technologies. Refusal to change with the times means you will get left behind. This grower could have, over the last ten years, been gradually replacing older, less healthy trees with the resistant varieties. But for whatever reason, he chose not to. Now he is whining about the consequences. This ban did not just happen overnight. There has been plenty of time to prepare. I, for one, would not be buying his peaches anyway because I buy organic local and in season. And that is how we all should consider acquiring our produce.
Well, Lucy I see that you make alot of assumptions in your comments. Comparing your two trees to this farmers hundreds of trees is laughable. You don’t know the condition of his trees. And as for planting more disease resistant trees . Comsumers have a big say in that department. Certain types sell better than others. I’m not a big fan of oganics because they are misshappen ,discolored and spotted. GMO feeds the world !
It’s the overuse of fungicides that caused this problem in the first place. Do a little research on Benomyl and you’ll learn that it disrupted the delicate balance of fungi in the soil. The good fungi have been destroyed but the most virulent strains have survived and mutated. Some of these mutant fungi are responsible for inflammatory diseases because they eventually end up in decaying water damaged buildings. When man decides to play God, we all pay!!!

I’m with Lucy…this article was intended to create sympathy for the grower and foment hatred of the EPA (which does some stupid things) with no mention of the chemical he was using. Humans survived for eons before GMO wise-guys came along with their chemical treats which they now tout as “feeding the world” when the opposite has been proven true. Mr. Thompson…BTW, do you work for Monsanto or DuPont? Personally, I’ll take a spotted/discolored, mis-shapen peach, apple, tomato…over a fake, cardboard, tasteless, nutritionally deprived, but pleasing to the eye beautiful one any day! And I’d pay more to bite into something that resembled those I grew up picking off the ground in my grandmothers’ yard…even with worms in them!! They were natural and grown as intended. My dad was a 1950-70’s farmer who bought into the introduction of chemicals for every problem…herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers for bigger yields. And he, like many of our neighbors, died of Alzheimers at age 73…any connection? The “ozone layer” is a myth. Ozone is generated by UV radiation throughout the atmosphere and there is no way a small amount of any chemical could interfere with that process. More false science for bureau building and power over the people.

Sorry for not posting sooner: SHAME ON EPA; DOE; USDA; IRS, Child PS and other Alphabet Government Offices. The EPA, over-reach in Louisiana , extended to the 40 acre Patton Apple Orchard in business for more than 60 years, was also shut down in NW Ar. via claims the U.S.D.A approved fungicide, and pesticide used to protect and promote the Apple crop was contaminating the soil and ground water in the area.
The trees were dug up, and, surprise placed in a landfill. Shocker, so says the EPA, the land was condemned due to toxic contamination.
The real surprise, the same contaminated ground, was then approved for the construction of a Junior high school, for approximately 500 students, with an adjoining three housing areas with prices at $250,000 to $300,000. each.
Reality sets in when the question is asked, “If the ground was condemned, Apple trees destroyed, the family bankrupted, then forced to leave the property”, Whatsoever makes the ground safe to have students attending classes, and walking across campus?”
No one can tell me and cause me to believe the statement, “I’m from the government and here to help you!”

You are absolutely correct. It’s all about the almighty dollar. The EPA is one of the most corrupt agencies in the government. Of course they’re just following in the foot steps of the dictator. They have been consistently slapped down by the courts as not allowing due process, but they continue to ignore the court orders. Something must be done! Do away with all these agencies, Dept of ED, EPA, IRS. etc. If we have to, rebuild with the constitution in mind, but replace all personnel with responsible, law abiding members, something obummer has no clue about.
It is not just the Peach orchards they (DOE here) are targeting, here they have been targetting cattle producers for a few years – don’t want cattle in the creeks. How do you get water to your cattle? Even though it has been proven through numerous studies that having livestock in the creek is good for it. Now they are going after the wheat farmers chemicals they say that are not good for the environment, yet they cover opur roads all winter with magchloride that washes into the creeks. And oh yes eats the paint off of your car. They also still want to take the dams out of the snake river – the salmon runs are not an issue. Do they even know how many farms would be non exsistent without the resivouirs for water to water crops? America feeds the world – 273 people per farmer. I believe that the government is out to close ALL privatly owned family farms – we are a threat to them farmers can live off the land, we can make due with certain city comforts. we can also protect ourselves. We need to unite as a group farmers against the EPA & DOE
It is too bad the Mitchum family isn’t into organic or just pesticide free. They would get more money for their crops and wouldn’t need permission to use nothing. The EPA couldn’t claim toxicity where there is none. Also cost would go down because they wouldn’t be paying a huge chemical bill. Maybe they could turn lemons into lemonade and consider this a blessing in disguise as a new opportunity.
My thoughts exactly Susan! More and more people are going organic now anyway. We don’t want to ingest chemicals anymore, so how’s about this farmer gets some advice from organic peach farmers and they will not only keep their orchards, they will make more money, we’ll be chemical free, and we’ll all be happy. This does not mean the end of peaches. He will rise above it he’s an America farmer isn’t he?! ;-)
I know nothing of peaches and don’t think I’ve ever seen an organic peach. I do however grow organically in my greenhouse. No chemicals allowed. I use vinegar for pest control and that usually works well, except for grasshoppers. For these I use a BB gun.
I know apple cider vinegar and lemon juice are used more and more as cancer preventative measures and natural bacteria fighters for bad bacteria…maybe someone could experiment with these to fight the kinds of blight and funguses that attack fruit trees. Example, when I developed a bad growth of fungus under a damaged fingernail, I soaked it nightly in pure organic apple cidar vinegar. It eventually healed under the nail. The alternative was surgery. Just thinking out loud, thanks for reading.

@Susan – It’s not about the fungicide … it’s about control. Your assertions are false, because the EPA would and have come against Organic farmers (eg: the Amish), for using animals to cultivate their soil (ie: pull the plow & disc). They were raided, fined, threatened, and told to either put diapers on their animals, or use synthetic fertilizers.
It’s not about WHAT we’re doing … we could be doing ANYTHING, and it would be WRONG, because it’s about CONTROLLING us … plain and simple.
Please give me a break. There is no such thing as the Ozone layer. Ozone is O3 or an energized form of Oxygen formed by high energy discharge examples are Lightning, powerful electric motors and ultra violet light from the Sun. Its halve life is 30 minutes so in an hour its gone. Ozone is heaver than air so settles to the ground especially in low lying areas. Ozone’s main function is to clean the air by oxidizing organic matter. It does not shield us from the Sun, that’s the job of the Earth’s magnetic field. This concludes today’s lesson in Science.

How strange: But hear this DANGEROUS Fact: The Patton family HAD an apple orchard for more than 45 years, in an area that eventually was in and then overshadowed by a Mom & Pop store, i.e. Wal-Mart Corp. HQ, The apple orchard land was deemed to be contaminated with toxic pesticides, from spraying the trees. Yet, after the land was condemned, trees destroyed (save less than 20). Miracles of all environmental miracles occurred. The land was purchased by the Public School District, and a $65 million High School was built on the self same, contaminated and condemned apple orchard property. It was far to toxic for the apple orchard to stay in business, but it was just fine for an additional High School to be built on that property. And about 30, $1/4 million mansions was built across the street. For the “Kicker” to the Patton family, there were held accountable of the pesticide contamination and fined an extreme amount, forced into bankruptcy and vacant the property. I guess when the Giant Gorilla says leave, it doesn’t matter who has the deed to real estate, you leave. Lest I forget. The unjust BULLYING impetus of Eminent Domain Law. Unfortunately, this pesticide which is used on conventional crops is a hazard both to our bodies and to our environment. Methyl bromide, used to disinfect soil, is 60 times more damaging to the ozone layer than chlorofluorocarbons, which are banned. Methyl bromide is also acutely toxic. Exposure to high concentrations can cause damage to the respiratory and central nervous systems, even death.
The methyl bromide phaseout was agreed to during Ronald Reagan’s presidency in the 1987 Montreal Protocol, an international treaty involving nearly 200 nations. It was supposed to be completed by 2001, although agricultural users with no feasible alternatives have been given a critical-use exemption.
One alternative, Fluensulfone, provides lower-risk chemical control of nematodes than its seven existing alternatives, including methyl bromide.
One might think that farmer Mitchum would have planned to change his practices, given that he’s had 27 years to find alternatives, rather than be belly-aching about regulations at the last moment. If he returned to the way peaches were grown before agriculture became the biggest market for poison manufacturers, he could market them as organic and even I would buy from him.
organic is a joke — if you do not pay 3k to 5k for organic label useability — you can not sell as organic. Have you seen any planes spaying for anythiny or any county trucks riding on roads spaying weeds or any soy bean farmers spaying Roudup or any cotton farmers spaying Roundup, with a drift of 13 miles recorded by gov. The only way to grow organic is using material made without any chemicals leaching and inside a green house which has a change of pure air every hour (medical air tank quality) then when inspector come to test his test instruments will not record any numbers and he will say “no approval” . So without his numbers from your material which is organic he will not let you sell as organic.
The EPA is not an essential gov’t agency and should be defunded and done away with. Our gov. is a useles bunch of bunglers. If the REPUBS don’t run a constitutional conservative and lower the gov. over reach and get back to the basics of the constitution and smaller gov. as it was intended, we are EFFIN screwed. Then we lose all our liberties and freedom. A pres. who runs the gov. that has a military background would be nice, run a constitutional conservative GENERAL as a nominee for PRES. One that has no fear and cannot be intimidated and does what he says and means.
I doubt if there is nothing else to treat the trees. It might even be cheap. But typically the chemical companies want to sell their chemical basically. Maybe some iodine compound instead of bromine for example (but that would end up in the peach and cause people to not be lacking in iodine anymore, and be much healthier, less cancer etc and the drug companies won’t like that. They took iodine out of bread and used bromine, an iodine antagonist, afraid we might be getting “too much”. BS. Maybe hyd. peroxide would work (too cheap). Or just healthy trees may fight it naturally, using organic methods. There’s always some angle to these issues it seems.
Is it possible Monsanto is behind this. They have gmo’d almost everything else why mot destroy something they’ve had no control over. Or maybe destroy our good food claim the land, then grow more gmo’d food to kill us off faster by taking the non gmo food away.
I did a little research, and according to what I found the banned chemical is lindane which is a chlorinated pesticide much like DDT. It doesn’t break down in the environment and air currents can move it as far north as the Artic. Some research says it has been linked to cancer. Lindane is banned in 52 countries. Are the scientists right in getting it banned ? You don’t know what to believe.
Do not pull the DDT card, even the UN is trying to bring it back to kill insect bearing insects, but everyone made such a big deal about it the first time around no one will produce it; and by the way the absence of DDT has cause over 500,000 deaths due to malaria, which is why everyone wants it back and there never were any links to human deaths to DDT, the Killer was DTT.
We can’t save the peach trees ? Why. Didn’t the E P A stop nuclear ! You cannot do anything with the waste ! Oh yea & there holding tanks of spent fuel rods they will never leak out.
Peaches and other crops CAN be grown organically and sustainably, and in my opinion, that is a goal we should be ultimately working toward. With that being said, it makes no sense for the EPA to ban methyl bromide, while allowing other more toxic chemicals and GMOs. Their arbitrary regulations seem to be based more on who has the money and the power, rather than the actual degree of harm caused to people and the environment. I only hope that our newly elected politicians will begin to return some sanity to our government on all levels.
Without telling us what the chemical we are talking about your comments are no better than Obama’s constant lies. It is just bad mouthing someone who deserves it and by doing so with out the facts that support the position, you are lowering yourself to his level.
Is this the only way to protect the Peach trees? What other methods are there. Maybe in this case the EPA is doing something right. With out telling us the chemical we can not know.

We all know there are a ton of pesticides on certain foods. Is it so wrong to protect the consumer who eats the produce and in the end is affecited by it.
There is a reason why organic has such a huge interest from the public!
What chemical are we talking about Frank? What did the peach orchard business use before this chemical? Is this farmer not able to find out if there is a better way to treat his trees? Has he even tried?
I feel like the EPA needs to be required to offer an alternative solution to any thing they are banning or restricting.

Last night “We the People” spoke and finally took control of the House and Senate. Of course, His Majesty King Berry Obama has yet to be dethroned and is still threatening to run a muck with his “pen and phone” …
However, now that Republican have the chance … let’s all pressure our representatives to ABOLISH the EPA as it is!!!!
Yes, we should have an agency with the skills and real scientific expertise with the ability to monitor HAZMAT production, monitor the safety of our waters and lands … BUT, they cannot be given the unsupervised authority the EPA has today!
There are dozens of initialed agencies that are a waste of OUR money and their staffers are simply wasting air and living the good life enjoying bulletproof government jobs while accomplishing little to nothing!
Come on people! Let’s get involved! Let’s take the time to think, and then respectfully hammer this refreshed Congress and make them do what is right for the nation rather than themselves.

They (govt) only protect themselves and big money corporations. Now that the rebublicans are in the majority we are ALL screwed. So disappointed in the “land of the free”. This poor peach tree grower is just another example of this governments insanity. They spray toxic chemicals into the atmosphere everyday w/chem trails but the farmer can’t spray his sick trees???? The Power of the Mental Midgets at the top can be daunting and unbelievable to say the lease. The Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, was created with the understanding that its sole purpose in the Federal Government is to protect the United States of America from any and all environmental disasters or potential disasters.
Over the years, the EPA, has wandered from its initial assignment and has become the strong arm of any administration that wanted a potential cooperation, company or individual out of its way. In this case, the EPA has its sights on Joe Mithcham’s peach orchard down in Louisiana.
In 2005, The federal government’s banned a chemical known as methyl bromide, used to treat diseased peach trees. Mr. Mitcham must use this chemical on his diseased peach trees or the disease will spread throughout his orchard. Unfortunately, there is no known substitute to treat diseased peach trees. At lease not in the foreseeable future before Mr. Mitcham goes out of business.
The real reason why the EPA is enforcing this ban on Methyl Bromide is that the United States and 26 other countries agreed in 1987, through an international treaty, to phase the product out of the market.
It doesn’t matter what this ban will affect, according to the EPA point of view, as long as the use of the chemical is no longer used.
Mr. Mitcham has stated that there are so many EPA regulations that he can no longer grow peaches or any other fruits on his land. To be hamstringed by EPA regulations to the point that a man can and will lose his livelihood; is not what the American People had in mind when they wanted to protect the environment in the United States. At the very lease an exemption should be used until another product can be found to treat diseased peach trees or any other fruit trees.
When the EPA spokeswoman Enesta Jones was asked about the agency’s so called experts and where they can be reached she replied, that many of the agency’s experts on the subject of methyl bromide are “out of the office this week.” This is a common way of doing business in the EPA, every one is either out to lunch or out of the office for the week. I call it the hit and run tactic of Federal Bureaucracy . The EPA hands out its rules and regulations via the mail; but go to them for a face to face encounter you will find that these people are ghosts. When you ask for reconsideration you are told “no!” Now you have to take the EPA to court and hope that you have enough money to last the years that it will take to get that exemption until scientist come up with an alternative chemical to treat diseased peach trees.
Now you may asked what is the big deal over a peach orchard. This chemical not only treats peaches but other fruit trees. With food prices raising higher and higher; how much higher will they go when you have to start to import your peaches and fruits from South America because it is against EPA regulations.
This isn’t the only business that the EPA has out of business. The last smelting plant for lead is scheduled for closing by the end on 2013. Once again the numerous regulations put the Doe Run shuttered smelter, out of business over concerns of its air-quality control.
The Doe Run, is located in Herculaneum, Missouri. Facing regulatory concerns about its air-quality record, Doe Run announced in 2010 that it had reached a settlement with the EPA and the state of Missouri which included paying fines. Then, in December 2013, it shut down. Now you will have to purchase your bullets from an oversea source. You will now have to pay through the nose for every round you buy and the Government can now regulate what ammo comes into this country – all thanks to the EPA.
