Could walking and chewing gum represent the next crime wave?
In a state containing perfectly legal brothels and where gambling addicts are spending their last dime, they’re thinking about making it illegal to text or read texts on cellular phones while crossing streets, including in low-traffic, residential neighborhoods.
Here we have a classic example of a lawmaker – paid by taxpayers’ dollars – having nothing better to do than come up with new ways to restrict the freedoms of Americans. Nevada Assemblyman Harvey Munford has crafted Assembly Bill 123 to make it illegal for pedestrians to send or read texts pedestrians while crossing a road. He has said he is even interested in introducing a media campaign portraying texting while walking as childish and dangerous.
The bill is in response to a study finding that – and I hope you’re sitting down for this very disturbing information – one in four pedestrians does not follow all intersection crossing rules. Oh, my gosh! I hope none of those outlaw pedestrians walked outside of the white lines or, worse yet, carried a scissors while crossing the street! Can you imagine the horrible consequences that would ensue if a texting teenager were to slow down a driver on his way to a brothel?
Munford’s previous bill, by the way, proposed a five-cent fee on fast food items with 500 or more calories. I’m sure he’s very popular among teens. There’s a pretty straightforward article here that refers to the “nanny state” mentality that many in government are trying to impose on us.
Regardless of whether you have ever used your cellular phone to send or read text messages, how do you feel about laws dictating when and where a person can do it? Do you think a law like that could result in saving a life, or is it more likely to bog down police officers who presumably have more important things to do? Please let me know what you think.
I am amazed at the focus on how stupid the texter is and how much he deserves to be eliminated from the gene pool. There is a second victim here, the driver. Firstly current laws do hold the driver responsible. The driver will have to pay for tickets and possibly receive a jail sentence for the accident. Then the texter or his family may sue the driver, more expense. Now comes the most deva stating after the fact, the driver’s emotional state. Normal people do not respond with “Yea! 2 points for an idiot. ” They are overcome with guilt, usually requiring years of therepy. A friend of mine hit a man on a bicycle that was blasting through an intersection with a red light. No ticket since the bike rider disobeyed the traffic laws. But he was so distraught because he had killed a person (even a dumb one) that he never drove again. A law shitting the blame from “the pedestrian has the right of way” to the pedestrian is responsible for his own behavior sounds like a good one to me.

I will say this again. Find the “term limits petition” online and sign it! Then send them some money! Even $5 is $5 more than they have now. Then when term limits get proposed in your state GET INVOLVED! That way when the morons elect another moron he or she will be limited to one, or at most two terms, and cannot be elected again. Of course, another moron will run, and the moronic voters will vote for him, but we’ve got to start somewhere and keep at it. As far as texting while crossing a busy street goes, it’s called “survival of the fittest”, and if they die it cleans the gene pool of stupid genes. If people OD on illegal drugs, LET THEM DIE. It was THEIR CHOICE to do it. It’s part of being free. Stupid people make stupid choices and it’s all part of life and death. Do you do drugs? No? That might mean you’re one of the smart ones, and figured it out all on your own, without some politician making it illegal “for your own good!” Remember– I’m from the government and I’m here to help.

Wow, this has certainly stirred up a lot of comments. I live in Alberta, where we have distracted driving laws, which are broken all the time. It is a law that is almost impossible to enforce. I have to deal with traffic everyday, like you all do. In the inner city when you are trying to turn and must wait for pedestrian to cross, but some idiot is texting and not focused on clearing the crossing to allow the flow of traffic before the light changes is my pet Peeve. I don’t think that the law should center on cell phone users, but it should be an law against doddling in a cross walk.

I do disagree on you with this one. Texting or any activity that causes people to be unaware of their surroundings is a bad thing. Too many pedestrians are being killed because of it. As much as I agree with our freedom being maintained, this is one freedom that’s just stupid and dangerous for not only the texter, but the driver who has to be aware of all the idiots mindlessly walking out in traffic.
Freedom comes with personal responsibility. It can not coexist with 100% security or safety. If someone is too stupid to pull their head out of the micro USB port to cross a street, why should that be used to restrict my freedom?
I know this sounds crazy but if you watch people walking and texting, they pay no attention to what is going on around them. I have stopped a few from walking in to traffic. Bill O’Reilly has said it best…The electronics that we all use daily will become the demise of so many people. As long as there are stupid people out there, laws will have to be made to save them from themselves. Texting while driving has become worse than drunk driving. I deal with that every day. I believe that is called DEFENSIVE DRIVING. That is what we were taught when I learned to drive. To look, see and anticipate a possible bad action from outside your car and do what ever necessary to prevent an accident. And people in the cross walk have the right of way.

In Toronto Ontario a little eight year old girl was killed a couple of months ago on her way to school because she was texting and did not see the cement truck making a turn in front of her. She walked into the side of the truck and was crushed. This world is too dangerous to not pay attention at all times. PASS THIS LAW. IF SAVES ONE LIFE, IT IS WORTH IT.

It is getting pretty rediculous how much authority a government of the people think they should have over us. Pretty soon they are going to start telling us who we can and can’t marry. The way it is now is that our so called lawmakers are to damn busy trying to get into the limelight at our expense. It doesn’t matter what the topic is as long as their name goes down in the record book as the person that fathered a new law. Even though there are term limits written into the US Constitution, id.: The House of Representatives serve a two-year term; the House of Senators, a six-year term; and the President a four-year term – after their terms are over they continue to receive pensions of $60,000 year up to or more than $100,000 per year for doing nothing. Of course they don’t worry about the unemployed. they will never be in that category. This pension law for having served only 4 years has to be abolished. Think of all that money that could go back into the Social Security fund they have stolen from!
I agree that pensions for any and all government employee’s need to be readdressed. In this situation, the Federal Representatives and Senators term limits and their pension should be tied to two different items. The then President Clinton changed the ability of the service man, someone in the Armed Forces, to receive a their pension after twenty years of service. It use to be that a person that put in 20 years of service in the military would get a pension. However, to cut costs to the Federal Government, President Clinton put into law that when they turn 62 and a half years of age then they would be entitled to receive their pension. I therefore suggest that the same should be done to and for our representatives. I suggest that they receive a pension when they reach 62 and a half and not before. This will cut costs for a Federal Government. Furthermore, when they reach 62 and a half years of age; that they do not get any cost of living increases until after they start receiving their pension. 2.) Any government Representative, Senator, or any other government official can not receive a pension until serving at lease two terms in Federal service and that they do not receive any other pension, other than military, along with their Federal service pension. All too often, a politician will receive a pension from his state, county and city government service. This is a FAT CAT GETTING FATTER. 3.) Any Government Representative, Senator, or Official, even the President, will forfeit their pension if they are guilty of a crime while in office, whether they are brought before Congress of the courts, or if they admit their crimes to the people. For example, when President Clinton was impeached, or President Nixon when he resigned in disgrace.
When you limit the amount of pensions that a career politician can receive; then everyone will save some money. I realize that the career politician will squawk and demand that this doesn’t occur, considering his service to his country; but when you consider the other perks that these politicians get, like insider information about a stock or bond that they can act upon, which is illegal to you and me and everyone else, I would say that it is a fair trade off. After all their pension is just a mere drop in the ole bucket compared to what they really earn, wouldn’t you say?

While it seems like common sense to pay attention to your surrounding environment while crossing the street, this is not the purpose of government. I recently saw a program on television on how illegals come to this country and get social security benefits. They go back to mexico and once a month on the first cross the border to the U.S. post office and get their checks . what the hell is wrong with this picture. I thought you had to work in this country a certain amount of years in order to even collect .I now know why our country is in dire straights. They use our benefits and that’s why hospitals and S.S. are in the toilet. Our politicians are clueless and don’t give a damn because they are rich and most likely will never

As far as any laws around hand-held devices being outlawed while operating a vehicle, I am all for it. I ride a motorcycle and have narrowly missed my demise countless times while blissfully inconsiderate idiots chat in a daze on their phones or blindly drive while texting. If it involves only themselves, let the natural elimination begin.
Let them all get ran over, it seems that THAT is what they deserve. Besides, who needs a generation that is so “egocentrical” involved, that they have forgotten the main rules of “street-safety?” Let them walk upon traffic, I would love to run them over! This is already illegal in our town. There have been several accidents, including a death, because pedestrians were too busy texting to pay attention to traffic. They seem to think that those wide, white lines of crosswalks are a magical force that protect them from any harm. They’re wrong, obviously. People are too wrapped up in their technology instead of being connected to the world around them.
I think making it illegal for an entire state is ridiculous. But where it is necessary, it’s what needs to be done.
The lead up to this story, before I clicked on it, was spot on. This story makes me laugh and cry. At the same time. I laugh at folks who may or may not get hurt or killed simply due to the fact that they are so oblivious to their surroundings, all because they insist on faceless communication, but up close , in person, they are rude and unsociable. I know that sounds wrong, but society can do without some folks, I want to say. I was driving on a 4 lane road a moron was walking toward me on the shoulder texting, he began to enter the road and was half way in the left lane before bothering to pay attention: he was going straight. The law would allow a cop to ticket this type of idiot. Best law legal road kill.

We are currently faced with too much government from federal down to the city.
If we were to focus on the enforcement of laws already on the books and ensure that the more violent of them were properly dealt with, we might be better off.

It really bothers me that so many people are so involved with themselves that they have forgotten that even in this free country that you need to be aware of what is around you and where you are going. Too many people seem to stick there head into some device and ignore the things around them.
I think we should not allow the government the ability to micro manage and control our every move. Walking and texting cannot be compared, in any way, with walking and chewing gum. Texting takes our eyes and mind off of what we are doing and our environment, and focuses it on the screen and keyboard of our hand-held device. Chewing gum does neither. The problem is that people don’t use common sense, and because of this, accidents occur. It is irrepsonsible and negligent for anyone to be walking or driving while texting. I have had several people bump into me while walking because they were texting instead of watching where they were going. The occurence of pedestrians being hit by cars because they are not paying attention to traffic due to texting is becoming a serious issue. AND the driver is held responsible for this negligent behavior. So, laws have to be made because of the minority of people who don’t govern themselves responsibly. So, if we have a beef about laws being made, we should address the cause of the problem, rather than the undesirable solution.
This could go on forever…People deep in though could also walk in front of a car. Do we need to pass laws to make thinking while walking against the law? Somewhere have to stop and make people responsible for their own actions. It seems like many people are so used to being micromanaged they do not want to take any personal responsibility for themselves and/or their own actions.

This is a drivers license turned into a federal ID…and I do not
work for the government…I just drive a car to a non federal
business punch a time clock and do my work for the day.
What is Real ID. It was mandated after 9-11 took place by George
Bush, requiring every US Citizen to prove they’re not terrorist.
The problem is HLS is forcing Lower US states that are sovereign
states with state statues in place (4th & 10th amendments)
against the new REAL ID forced on them.
Real ID is a real nightmare to obtain…particularly for senior
citizens born before 1945. Most record keeping was done by a
human…no computers back then.
The Real ID is supposed to stop ID theft, But the technology on
the rear strip of the licenses has RFID (Radio Frequency
Identification) that broadcast all of your personal
Information embedded on the strip (1st & last name, DOB, SS#,
Medical Records) the RFID is a radio device that broadcast messages
from 3 to 20 ft, away.
the program info is PGP (Pretty Good Programing). Any criminal
hacker can access your info on the license (Like the new wireless
credit cards with the same technology RFID)using a remote pocket
sized electronic RFID Scanner, and steal your private info off your
license or credit card.
BTW…This technology RFID on your license can be used on any
satellite and you can be located anywhere in the world.
Once the hacker has stolen and copied your info to a USB thumb
drive, he then sells it to another criminal that becomes you.
Now back to the problem of getting the new REAL ID…you have to
bring 5 documents (Social Security, Mortgage, Letter from your
Landlord, Utility Bill, Insurance card, Military dd214 form) and
here’s where your 4th amendment is being violated,. they do not ask
for a warrant for your personal property, it is then scanned into a
government data base, then stored on their data base.
All ready this data base storing your data is at high risk and a
haven for criminal hackers to access your private info.
Secondly the US Government and HLS has forced this on states to
comply with a federal law that states are a sovereign state with
their own 10th and 4th amendments in their Constitution.
So far 17 states have complied…but with a huge reward from uncle
same…1.6 million and ignoring their citizens privacy and a blind
eye to the 10th amendment.
Now for Seniors like myself…their are about 8.6 million seniors
that have been denied to renew their drivers license. and with the
new federal id in place…you and I will not be able to cash
our social security, VA disability, withdraw money or deposit funds
into any federal bank,Plus we will no be allowed to board a train,
plane, bus, or go on a pleasure cruse without the new feds Real ID,

been denied several times due to the typo on the day I was born (Plus

I have had my birth day and Christmas day celebrated same day…I
was not fortunate to have a family…my mom and died died when I was
seven…I was in boys homes and foster care…and a runaway…
What the DMV wants to prove that the certificate I just got ( that
was a nightmare because did not know my mothers DOB or her maiden
name) the FL DMV wants an affidavit signed by a family member
verifying the birth certificate is correct (because it is off by 5
days, the year is correct not the day).
There are seniors born in the south at home with a second
wife…and their records are not too clear…they too get denied.
What I see it as we the seniors with poor record keeping or typos
on our BC we are the outcast…or maybe we are the terrorist because
we can not prove who we are after living her 50 to 80 years as US
Citizens, held down professional jobs.
Now that this law is in place we will not be able to even get
welfare or food stamps. get a part or full time job (Due to E
verify)…but hey the illegals can get everything they need.
Did you know that this is exactly what Hitler did when he took
over a country…he created a ID system to weed out the Jewish
people.
So our government is weeding out the elderly…cuts back on social
security, VA disability, 401K…
I have asked my congressmen to help me…his reply was “Good
Luck” he has the same problem in getting his license…I wrote
to Senator Rubio…his replay…there was not a cure for my
problem…
Called Attorneys for help…seems they are afraid of Homeland
Security, like once in Germany the Gestapo…

Sean, I really feel your pain and frustration. I have family that lived in Tennessee. They were born at home and the only record to their existence was the family Bible or in some cases only the word from their mother or other family members. When you had to have a Social Security number and it became law; you needed a birth certificate in order to prove that you were born to receive a Social Security Card. A lot of people were left out due to special circumstances. In order to fix this problem, the State had a special board to address these problems with judges that can make a ruling on the matter making it legal. Perhaps this is needed again.
I suggest that you talk to your representatives and see if they can place a provision in the law to have any problems or discrepancies be addressed by a special panel with a judge at its head to make any necessary rulings legal.
Sean, as to the lack of support from your Congressman and other representatives, I suggest you get your local television station involve and put these people on the air showing that they have failed you. Because when your representative fails you; then these representatives will fail others. Once on TV, you will see these clowns move into action.
There are too many lives lost as a result of drivers AND pedestrians texting instead of paying attention to traffic. Quit whining about the “nanny state”, Obamacare, abortion, and all other laws upheld by the Supreme Court. We need jobs, housing, education, nutrition for poor children and the elderly, and the closing of tax loopholes for the greedy.

You talk about “whining” when you should be concern about your rights as a citizen of the US of A. The few laws that are addressed by the Supreme Court may have ramifications throughout the land; but, they are too few and far between to cover what laws that are passed almost on a daily basis. Without standing up for our Rights now; these new laws threaten to overwhelm us with rhetoric and redundancies. Remember, it is the mental midgets in office that we must keep our eyes on. They are there only to have their names go down in the record books as to proposing a new law, not for stupidity of that law.
You mention, in passing, what we need: jobs, housing, education, nutrition for the children and elderly and closing tax loopholes for the greedy. However, you failed to mention what we have laws that are already on the books to address the above mention needs. What we need to do is to get back to basics, an honest government, assistance for those in need (not an entitlement), fair play in all aspects of our daily lives and to hold everyone accountable for their actions or inactions.
So, don’t paint that ole whitewash with a broad brush. Rather, roll up your sleeves and pitch in to help. We don’t need any more back seat quarterbacks, or supervisors. We need doers, not talkers.

Well, if you ever accidentally hit someone crossing the street oblivious to ANY 2 ton vehicles traveling on the roadway you may think differently.
It is common place here, in California, for people to be hit by a vehicle only to have the responsible party run for the border.
A good friend was severely injured by such an accident. The guy that hit him took off running. When he was brought to court and sentence to prison, instead of giving him the 5 to 7 years for running away; he was given a 2 year sentence because there are too many prisoners. My friend was told that this guy will more than likely spend 18 months in prison with 5 years probation.
We need to cut the crap and hold everyone to accountability, this includes the judge, district attorney as well as the plaintiff. My friend didn’t even get a chance to ask this guy why didn’t he stop and render assistance. The judge told him that there is nothing he can do.
Use the laws that are on the books already and enforce them.
I think all politicians should only be in office no more than two years and then let someone else try. It is bull for these old fossils to be in office for anything lets get new blood and evolve every two years and if they are caught doing something illegal kick their butts out then. If the common person was found doing things these politicians do we would be tarred and feathered and persecuted to the max. You know all these politicians have more interest in foreign companies than they do their own country. Oh yeah and let’s go blow this country up now let’s take billions to build them back up better than before what about the American people that font have a home because they lost them. This is all getting so very old that they wonder why people go ballistic and shoot em up. They shouldn’t shoot the innocent but concentrate on the crooked politicians
Well Deb, are you aware that our Constitution has term limits already built into by our Founding Fathers?
2 years for Representatives, 6 years for Senators and 8 years for President? The sad fact is, NO-ONE wants to use them. IT IS CALLED VOTING. What we have going on now a days, is the political game of “well, it isn’t my guy who is the bad guy, it is your guy”. So nobody gets voted out. Mid-term primary elections such as the one we are now coming into, generally have a lower voter turnout than any general election, and even those have a pretty much dismal showing. Have always wondered where we get the nerve to “come down” on other countries and their voting methods, when we barely see about 50% of our own registered voters actually voting.
We can all only hope and pray that eyes have been opened this year and for the past few years and more VOTERS will turn out and we can hopefully sweep out our federal and state houses of all the old and actually be able to bring in some new. Sadly, however, I seriously doubt we will see it happen.
I don’t know, JM. It looks like the Republicans just got a swift kick in the butt just a few weeks ago. Maybe now they will come down from the clouds and meet us on the ground. We need leadership not some lofty goals for the rich and uninformed.
I think the people in government these days are the pot smokers of the 60’s and 70’s (could even be earlier). They have destroyed the logical portions of their brain and exposed the raw neurons so everything in their heads is pea soup! They have nothing better to do than try to make up things that they think earns them the status of being a “politician”.

That is easy. The police shoot first, out of fear for their lives, and worry about accountability and responsibility later. After all, they know that they get a “get out of jail” card for free with every offence they commit against its citizenry.
